John Kuhlman, WWII veteran, businessman
One of the few things that the John C. Kuhlman was always ready to talk about was his World War II combat experience.
Mr. Kuhlman, 78, who died Tuesday at his Edgewood home, fought with the 2nd Armored Division to liberate Normandy, participated in the Battle of the Bulge and helped occupy Berlin.
One of his favorite stories involved his work with a reconnaissance patrol that came upon a German convoy, said his son, Paul Kuhlman, of Atlanta, Ga.
The convoy carried pay rations for the German army in the area. After overwhelming the Germans, Mr. Kuhlman and some of his buddies tried to use the cash to buy a tavern or restaurant.
But the deed they got in the deal was not honored when they returned later.
Mr. Kuhlman returned to Europe in 1994 for the 50th anniversary of D-Day and revisited all the towns he had helped liberate.
He had very fond memories of the war, his son said, and the visit brought them all back.
After the war, Mr. Kuhlman worked for his father at the former Wadsworth Electric Manufacturing Co. at 11th Street and Madison Avenue in Covington. He became president of the company in 1978 until its sale in 1991.
He was a founding family member of St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church in Edgewood and a former member of the board of trustees of Thomas More College.
Mr. Kuhlman was a quiet, stoic, reserved man with a boy's sense of humor. "He was very simple in his needs, " his son said. "He was never really showy about anything."
His wife, Marian Wenstrup Kuhlman, died in 1975.
