Herman Swillinger, 86, valued honesty
In a business not always associated with honesty, Herman "Swilly" Swillinger refused to compromise his values.
The owner of Swilly's Auto Sales in Covington for more than 40 years, Mr. Swilly never let the prospect of an extra few bucks keep him from being honest with his customers who were looking for deals on used cars.
If there were a problem with one of the many used cars he sold over his career, he would fix it no questions asked, said his son, Tom Swillinger, of Blue Ash, Ohio, who took over the business when his father retired to Boynton Beach, Fla., a few years ago.
"People trusted him because they knew he was a straight shooter, " Tom Swillinger said. "Cars were his life, he was always collecting old cars or working on them."
Mr. Swillinger, 86, formerly of Cincinnati, died Tuesday in Florida as a result of a stroke suffered two weeks earlier at his home.
Swilly began his business career in Covington working at a clothing store owned by his in-laws. He later became a beer salesman, all the while washing and selling cars at night.
In 1957, he opened Swilly Auto Sales on Third Street, where a Holiday Inn now stands.
He later moved to 311 Fourth St., now the site of Jack's Glass, before moving the business to its current location at the corner of 24th Street and Madison Avenue.
"He was a quiet man who always minded his own business, " Tom Swillinger said. "He would just sit in front of his business and wave to the people as they went by."
