Cecil Searcy, Carroll Co. farmer and best pal to son
When Cecil E. Searcy died Sunday, Billy Ellis Searcy didn't just lose his father. He lost his best friend.
"We talked all the time. It seemed like we never shut up, " Billy Searcy said.
The two men farmed together in Carroll County and lived just about 150 yards away from each other in Sanders.
They raised tobacco, cattle and hay together, and ran Billy's dairy, until about 10 years ago, when Cecil's health started to decline and they sold their farms.
Mr. Searcy died at Owenton Manor in Owenton. He was 85.
The Searcys also hunted and fished together. "We did everything together, " Billy said.
But although he enjoyed farm work, Cecil had another business. He became Carroll County's first full-time Kentucky Farm Bureau Insurance agent in 1959, and sold insurance in that business until 1986.
Mr. Searcy took his religion seriously. He served as an elder for the Whites Run Christian Church, and then became a faithful member of the New Liberty Christian Church.
During the last decade of his life, he endured a heart operation, a broken hip and many other ailments. "If it could happen to a human being, it happened to him, " his son said.
As a child, Mr. Searcy had pneumonia, and doctors removed a rib so they could drain his lungs. He also lost most of the sight in one eye because of a childhood accident. But he enjoyed excellent health for most of his adult life.
He married
the former Bonnie Jean Pickett on Nov. 30, 1941, just one week before the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. His bad lung and bad eye kept him from serving in the military.
