Charles Hicks, 67, tavern owner
For about 25 years, Charles Clifford Hicks Sr. ran one of the most happening places in southern Kenton County.
Mr. Hicks, 67, of Morning View, who died Monday at Veterans Hospital in Cincinnati, owned the Spinning Wheel Tavern from 1965 until about 1987.
He also provided the entertainment, singing and playing guitar in a house band he formed with his father and brothers. He and the band turned down a chance to sing at the Grand Ole Opry because "he had a business to run, " said his son, Steve Hicks of Erlanger.
The tavern was just north of the Grant County line, and it drew patrons from dry Grant and Pendleton counties, Steve Hicks said.
"People respected him because he ran a nice, clean bar, " said Mr. Hicks' former wife, Jo Ann Hicks of Kenton County. "The language and everything was lady-friendly, to where you could take your wife or girlfriend."
Mr. Hicks grew up one of nine children in rural Kenton County. "They did all the things poor kids did. Nobody had money back then, " Jo Ann Hicks said.
He served as a tank commander in the Korean War, and left the Army after three years. He told his bride-to-be "there was nothing darker than the Korean landscape at night."
They married
in 1954, and Mr. Hicks proved himself a hard worker and a stern father. He worked in small factories and for a railroad before he bought the tavern.
After he sold the tavern, he earned money restoring old cars and rehabilitating old houses. Some of the houses he sold to his children at below market value, his son said.
He distanced himself from his family for a time after his divorce in 1982, Jo Ann Hicks said, but when he returned, "he really made up for the time he wasn't in their lives."
In recent years, he suffered from renal failure. He had planned to have a kidney transplant, with his youngest son, Brian, of Morning View, supplying the kidney.
But after a gall bladder surgery, his health declined immediately, and he was diagnosed with leukemia, Jo Ann Hicks said. She stayed with him for the last three months of his life.
"He died quietly. He was very peaceful and at rest when he died, " she said.
Mr. Hicks was an easygoing man, "but if you crossed him, look out, " his son said. He liked to tease people, and enjoyed telling a good, made-up story just to see if he could get them to believe him, he said.
He was generous, often lending money to people whom he knew couldn't pay him back, or helping them buy homes, or helping them fix their cars, his son said.
"I'm surely going to miss him, " his former wife said. "The kids are devastated."
