Catherine Laske, earned respect of her students
Her students at Notre Dame Academy called Catherine "Kay" Laske "Mac" behind her back.
The nickname came from the name she used at the time -- Sister Mary Immacula. Although she always pretended she didn't know about it, secretly she enjoyed being known as "Mac, " said her friend, Anna Marie Evans of Erlanger.
Ms. Laske, who died Wednesday at age 87, served as the principal of the school from 1950 to 1965 and from 1970 to 1971. She also taught math and physics there.
"She was one of the principals that people respected, but not feared, " Evans said. She often said that she wanted every one of her graduates "to be able to stand up in public and speak and hold her own as a Christian woman, " she said. She didn't accept "the idea of young ladies sitting back and being second-rate citizens, " Evans said.
Ms. Laske also taught at Bishop Brossart High School from 1965 to 1970, also serving as assistant principal from 1968 to 1970.
She left the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1971 and became a clerk for the Brotherhood of Railroad and Airline Clerks, now the Transportation Communications International Union. After retiring from the union in 1984, she volunteered for charities, including Habitat for Humanity and Be Concerned in Covington.
Ms. Laske was a very calm person with a wry sense of humor. "She enjoyed a good joke, but instead of a belly laugh, she would smile sweetly, " Evans said. "Once in a while, she could come out with a good zinger. She could knock you for a loop."
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
