Eric Meyer, musician who cared about other people
Eric D. Meyer was a person who not only said he cared about other people, he went out of his way to help them.
When he encountered homeless people, he befriended them. If they were hungry, he cooked them meals.
"He was a very loving and caring person, " said Mr. Meyer's father, David Meyer of Erlanger. "He was the kind of person who could make friends with anyone. He was very accepting of other people.
"His thoughts and his actions matched. There was no hypocrisy. What you saw is what you got. He had a need to care for other people."
Mr. Meyer, 25, of Erlanger, died Thursday in an apartment fire in the Clifton Gaslight District of Cincinnati.
He was multi-faceted and successful in his many endeavors.
At the age of 13 he received the rank of Eagle Scout in 1991 while a member of Boy Scout Troop 779 in Edgewood.
Mr. Meyer was a 1995 graduate of Villa Madonna Academy and, at the time of his death, was a student at Northern Kentucky University, pursuing a degree in English.
His professors were especially impressed with the poetry he wrote, praising his depth and grasp of the English language.
"He read all the great philosophers and read them with ease, " said David Meyer. "He was very intellectual and very, very spiritual."
Mr. Meyer was also a musician and song writer. He played lead guitar and bass for several local bands over the years and wrote many of the songs that the bands played.
He was an employee of Housing Opportunities Made Equal in Cincinnati.
"He was trying to be a voice for people who are often neglected, " said David Meyer. "That's the kind of person he was."
Other survivors include his mother, Marianne Meyer of Erlanger, his sister, Emily Meyer of Louisville, and his girlfriend, Elea Mihou.
