Mary Yancey, a member of Kenton 'pioneer family'

Mary Frances Bristow Yancey was one of the last old-time Kenton Countians.

A long-time Florence resident, Mrs. Yancey, 79, died Sunday at the Florence Park Care Center.

She was a homemaker and a former aircraft-factory worker during World War II.

She and her 78-year-old sister, Ruth Jane Bristow Carpenter, were the "last two Bristows from Bristow Road in Kenton County, " Carpenter said. "All of our people have been around here for a long time."

Mrs. Carpenter said their great-grandfather built Bristow Road decades ago.

Their extended relatives -- with surnames like Stephens and Williams -- also were staples of the community after building roads and farms named after themselves in Kenton County on land they'd owned since the Revolutionary War.

"We're just an old pioneer family, " Carpenter said.

Carpenter said she'll remember her sister as a devoted mother and wife.

Mrs. Yancey was married to her husband, James Robert Yancey, for 62 years, and the couple had four children. "She was just a hard-working mother who kept her house, " Mrs. Carpenter said. "She didn't have time for much else.

"She was always witty and positive. She was just my sister."

The sisters worked together at an aircraft factory in San Diego while their beaus served in the armed forces. Her husband-to-be was an Army man, Carpenter said, "and my brother-in-law was a Navy man, but they got along just fine."

Mrs. Yancey was also active in the Florence United Methodist Church, and she was a member and former president of the Edwin Miller Circle there.
