Scott McFarlane, software company VP
Scott A. McFarlane, vice president of Operations for Opinion One software company in Cincinnati, collapsed at his office Thursday and died at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. He was 41.
Mr. McFarlane was born in Canada and had moved with his family to Taylor Mill nine years ago to open his company's Cincinnati office, said his wife, Tracey.
He enjoyed sports and competition. He played softball and had planned to compete in a pool tournament this weekend. As a young man, he was a goalie for the Haileybury 54 hockey team in his hometown of Haileybury, Canada. The team went to the all-Canada championships in the early 1980s and came in second, Tracey McFarlane said.
His mother was American, and when she decided to move home, McFarlane and his brother and sister joined her, moving to the Phoenix area. "He was always ready for an adventure, " said his wife.
He worked for savings and loans and he and Tracey joined Friedman Marketing, which started the Opinion One software division.
"We traveled all over the country, opening offices, " she said.
"We were a great partnership, " she said. "We learned each other's strengths and weaknesses. Where one was weak, the other was strong."
After Mrs. McFarlane quit the company to pursue her own career, he supported her decisions and career moves.
"He was a great dad and a great husband, " she said. He played golf with his son, Duncan, 9, and would read books to their daughter, Rowan, 4.
"He traveled a lot, so when he was home, he wanted to be with his family, " his wife said.
"He was someone everyone just liked. He made you laugh. He was loving, he was adventurous."
"We don't know how he died. It might have been an aneurysm, " she said.
