John LaVelle, lawyer adored family, church
Although John C. "Jack" LaVelle worked long hours as an attorney, the Villa Hills resident made time for his family.
"Dad would go to the office at 7:30 a.m., work until dinnertime, help us with our homework and return to the office when we went to bed, " said his son, Stephen LaVelle of Villa Hills. "In the early years, dad was determined to be home for family dinners."
Later in life, he spent four nights a week playing cards with his 96-year-old mother, Mary R. Blanchet LaVelle, who lives at the St. Charles Care Center in Covington.
Mr. LaVelle died Sunday of esophageal cancer at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington. He was 57.
He was a founding partner of Deters, Benzinger and LaVelle, now Northern Kentucky's largest law firm, where he practiced corporate law, tax law, estate planning and probate law since 1972.
"Jack was the ideal partner, " said Gerald Benzinger, the firm's managing partner. "He always put the needs of the law firm and our staff before himself."
Other colleagues praised Mr. LaVelle for his wit, his modesty and his attention to detail in serving his client's interests. "Jack was a tremendous mentor, " said law partner Edward Zerhusen.
Mr. LaVelle represented many religious institutions, including the diocese of Covington, and was a member of the National Diocesan Attorneys Association.
Mr. LaVelle was dedicated to the church spiritually and professionally, and his service to it was the hallmark of his legal career, said Robert Hoffer, who worked with him for 23 years.
"Jack wanted to be remembered as a man who loved his family and his God, " said his widow, the former Linda Gaskins. They were married
for 34 years.
