Geraldine O'Quinn Austin, known for her cooking skills
Geraldine O'Quinn Austin had the best reason in the world to learn how to be a good cook -- her family's survival depended on it.
"She came from a poor background in Sulfur Creek, W.Va., " said a daughter, Wilma Saylor Rodriguez of Covington. "They had burlap sacks for dresses, and they raised a lot of their own food. Everything they cooked they made from scratch."
Mrs. Austin's father died in a mining accident when she was a baby, and she was orphaned at 14 when her mother succumbed to tuberculosis. She married
within a year and took her youngest brother into her home, where she further honed her cooking skills.
They stood her in good stead years later when she served as lead chef at Thomas More College and then as head cook at Marydale.
Mrs. Austin died at 3:45 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was 68.
"She was known for her fried chicken, her chicken and dumplings, and her homemade soups, " said Rodriguez. "She wasn't much on sweets, because she was diabetic, except she could sure make the fudge."
She moved to Cincinnati with her first husband, where she worked in a mattress factory, then later in her second husband's auto parts stores.
Growing up in tough times shaped her mother later in life, Rodriguez said. "She loved yard sales, and she loved money. If there was a dime to be made, she found a way to make it."
She tried to help her friends and was known for the good advice she dispensed to young people, Rodriguez said. "She was a very good mother and grandmother."
