Kenneth E. Perkins, 86, minister for 50 years
Kenneth Earl Perkins, a minister for more than 50 years, had two favorite quotes, both from the Bible: "A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly, " and "Christ in you, the hope of glory."
The Covington resident, who died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington, showed himself friendly throughout his 86 years, said those who loved him. And now, they said, he's found that hope of glory.
"The world don't know what they lost when he went home, " said Paula Farrell, a friend who cared for him in his last days. "He loved you no matter what. He never judged nobody."
Mr. Perkins grew up in Silver Grove, where he was a standout basketball player at Silver Grove High from 1935 to 1937.
He served in the Army during World War II, fighting in Normandy, Northern France, the Ardennes, the Rhineland and Germany. He earned five Bronze Stars and a Good Conduct Medal.
A lifelong patriot, his favorite Army memory was of the time when he carried the flag in front of more than 1, 500 troops.
After the war, he lived in California, where he led a Pentecostal Holiness church. He later received a license to preach from the International Deliverance Churches.
He also worked in a civilian capacity for a police department while in California, and later in life contributed financially to many law enforcement agencies.
He returned to Northern Kentucky in the 1980s and served as a roving evangelist. He was known as "the pillar" at the former Latonia Church of God, where Farrell's husband, Stephen, met him.
"He was more of a spiritual grandfather to me, " Stephen Farrell said.
Mr. Perkins loved to spice his preaching with humor, and was fond of joking and teasing with people, so much so that some women thought him a flirt, Farrell said. He also loved to play the harmonica.
"It was very easy to love that man, " Paula Farrell said.
Mr. Perkins' wife, Martha Bruner Perkins, preceded him in death.
