Fenton 'Turtle' Bradford, man of faith and family
Faith and family were the two constants in Fenton "Turtle" Bradford's life.
A devout and active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Latonia, Bradford died Sunday morning at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was 75.
"He was a man of faith, " said his wife of 53 years, Patricia J. Perry Bradford. "He loved the Lord first and then his family."
Turtle Bradford was a long-time Sunday school teacher at the church, a youth leader and an avid volunteer.
He was also a former member of the Calvary Christian School Board.
"He loved the young people, " Patricia Bradford said. "That's the ministry he loved the most. And all the young people loved him."
Bradford's work with young people extended to Christians of elementary, junior high, high school and college age. He also was heavily involved in the camp ministries at the church, his wife said.
Bradford's nickname had been with him since he was a 12-year-old caddy at the Twin Oaks golf course in Latonia, where he often carried the golf bags of the local club pros.
Because of his short, 12-year-old stature, when he carried two bags at once, only his head was visible. The pros gave him his nickname because he looked like a turtle popping out of its shell, Patricia Bradford said.
Bradford was a retired foreman with the former Exhibit Group in Cincinnati. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War.
Patricia Bradford said she would always remember her husband's relationship with their seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
"He really loved the grandkids, and he loved to go fishing with them, " she said. "That was probably the thing he loved best -- being with family and doing things with his grandchildren."
