Bradford Powell, loved Dayton
Bradford Powell enjoyed traveling, but to him there was no place like home in Dayton.
"After he retired, we traveled to 45 states, " said Vera Powell, Mr. Powell's wife of 45 years. "Each September, we just started driving. At some point, though, he would say, 'It's time to go home to Kentucky.'"
Mr. Powell especially loved living in Dayton.
"One time I suggested that we move away, and he said to me, 'They will take me out of Dayton in a pine box.'"
Mr. Powell, 70, died Monday -- at his home in Dayton.
He worked as a welding supervisor at Cincinnati Gas & Electric Co., retiring in 1988 after 32 years.
After retiring, he purchased Fort Thomas Laundromat and operated it until 1996.
Mr. Powell was a member of Highland United Methodist Church in Fort Thomas.
He was a Navy veteran and an avid bass fisherman, camper and gardener.
"He was the most honest person I've ever met, " said Mrs. Powell. "For instance, we went to Canada on a trip and when we came back to the United States we had to declare what we bought in Canada.
"I bought a postcard, but wasn't going to declare it because it only cost 35 cents. He said, 'We have to declare that.' That was the kind of person he was.
"He was an extraordinary person. He was a very simple man, nothing fancy or anything like that. He was a wonderful, wonderful father and provider. He left his children a really good name."
