Thomas Steffen, former Post typesetter turned to tech firm

When Thomas Steffen found something he was good at, he stuck with it. When outside factors prevented him from carrying on, though, he was resourceful enough to find other pursuits -- and to become good at them.

Thus, when typesetters were phased out as The Kentucky Post merged its production facilities with the Cincinnati Enquirer's, Mr. Steffen found a job at Cincon Systems, a software company. There he worked for 22 years on the company's Web site and other projects.

When a bad knee curtailed his bowling career after more than 30 years, he took up golf. He and three friends played every Saturday, weather permitting, for more than five years.

Mr. Steffen, of Florence, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was 62.

Bowling and singing were his passions, said his wife, Carolyn Steffen.

Even after he had to give up bowling, he continued to serve as a commissioner of the Tri-City Bowling Association, helping to organize tournaments and leagues.

He was a member of the choir for 30 years at St. Paul Catholic Church in Florence, and he often sang solos during liturgies or for special occasions.

"He loved to sing, " said his wife. "He sang around the house all the time."

He was also active in Big Stef Inc., a charity organized by his brother, Bob, of Newport. The organization provides food baskets and other gifts for nursing home residents in Campbell County.

Her husband, who was an Army veteran, had a lot of fun in his life, Carolyn Steffen said. "He was jolly, never serious, always upbeat, " she said.

Other survivors include a son, Matthew Steffen of Newport; daughters, Colleen Steffen-Sparrow of Indianapolis, Ind., and Megan Steffen of Florence; sisters, Thelma Enzweiler of Newport and Mary Schneider of Alexandria; and two other brothers, Norman Steffen of Burlington and Paul Steffen of Southgate.
