Rich King, former Cincinnati radio personality
Rich King, whose three stints in Cincinnati during a 50-year broadcasting career made him one of the best-known names in local radio, died of pancreatic cancer Saturday in Naples, Fla. He was 68.
King began his Cincinnati career working for WCKY in 1964. He joined WLW in 1965. After a brief stint in San Diego, he returned to Cincinnati to work for WKRC before leaving for Florida in 1990.
His career also took him to St. Louis, Kansas City and Milwaukee.
"What everyone remembers about Rich King is his unique wit, " wrote Nick Clooney, Post columnist and television and radio personality, in a column last year.
"There was never a moment when I sat with him on his show, my show, or anyone else's show that I did not know I was outclassed. And let me hasten to add, I was not chopped liver. He was just better, " Clooney wrote.
"Rich has always been, forgive the overused adjective, unique. I grieve for a generation of Cincinnatians who have not heard him on the radio, a medium he helped reinvent in the 1960s."
Clooney wrote that King was battling recurring cancer "with the same unquenchable courage he showed battling ignorance, and the other evils that surround us, all his professional life."
Late-night TV host David Letterman wrote in his biography that King was one of his comedic influences, along with Johnny Carson and Jay Leno.
"He used to devote large portions of his programs to broadcasting imaginary events, such as paddleboat races on the Ohio River or baseball games between nonexistent teams, the biography noted.
Born Richard Weidenbruch, the broadcaster spent the last dozen years doing an afternoon talk show on WNOG and later WINK-WNOG radio in Naples.
He is survived by his wife, Joan, and four grown children.
Mass will be held for King on Friday at St. John the Evangelist Church in North Naples.
The family requests that memorials be sent to the Ricky King Fund, which was set up after the death of his four-year-old son in 1978. Donations may be sent to the Ricky King Fund, 5051 Castello Drive, Naples, Fla. 34103.
