Shirley Green, loved family, church, song
Shirley Ann Banning Green combined the three loves of her life -- family, church and song.
Mrs. Green was the lead singer of the Green Family Gospel Quartet, which performed throughout the Midwest in the 1970s.
"After the Lord, her family came first, " said her husband, Lynne J. Green. "Music was a big part of her life. Her singing was a tremendous blessing."
Mrs. Green, 67, of Independence, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Center in Covington.
From 1970 through 1976, Mrs. Green was joined by her husband and their daughter, Cheryl, and son, Michael, in comprising the quartet that sang southern gospel songs at churches and other religious gatherings in Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin.
"We did a lot of traveling on weekends, " said Lynne Green. "Somebody would hear about us singing at one church and want us to come sing at another church."
The Greens never charged for their performances, but churches often took up collections to help the family out with their traveling expenses.
"We had a terrific time, " said Green. "The Lord blessed us and we were doing what we loved. Stopping singing was the most difficult thing we ever had to do."
The quartet broke up when the children grew up and left home "and it became more difficult to arrange practices, " said Green.
Mrs. Green was a former secretary for Union Presbyterian Church and a former treasurer of Morning View United Methodist Church.
"She was a very loving woman, outgoing and set a great example, " said her husband.
