Becky Steltenkamp, a family inspiration
Although she knows the phrase "devoted wife and mother" is overused, Dr. Carol Steltenkamp used it to describe her late mother, Becky Steltenkamp, because it fit her perfectly.
"She was always there for us, " she said of her mother, who died Friday at her Fort Wright home, at age 77.
Carol Steltenkamp of Lexington spoke Sunday from the home of her brother, Steve Steltenkamp, in Fort Wright, where she and her three siblings had gathered to celebrate his birthday. She attributed their closeness as a family to her mother.
"That's the sort of thing that mom would have us do, " she said. "She was truly the matriarch, not only of our family of four, but also to her five nieces and nephews."
Her daughter gave her mother credit for encouraging her to become a doctor. "She was a personal source of inspiration for me, " Carol said.
Mrs. Steltenkamp stepped into the role of wife and mother the day she married
Robert Steltenkamp, her late husband. He died in 1998, and the family buried him on their 50th wedding anniversary.
When Steve's wife became terminally ill, Mrs. Steltenkamp helped take care of her.
When he remarried five years ago, she accepted her new daughter-in-law and became a grandmother to her two daughters.
"I think that says it all about her, " Carol Steltenkamp said.
