Richard A. Zornes, 64, loved genealogy, travel
Richard A. Zornes was a retired automatic substation operator with Cinergy and a widely known genealogist.
"Genealogy was a love of his, " said Mr. Zornes' wife, Judy M. Hunter Zornes. "He started when he was in high school, and he continued all through the years.
"He was able to trace family members back a long ways and had lots of information he shared with people all across the United States."
Mr. Zornes, 64, of Independence, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
Mr. Zornes had a pleasing, easy-going personality, said Mrs. Zornes.
"He loved telling funny stories, " she said. "He was a jokester, and folks said he was a character.
"Everybody loved him because if you were having a bad day and you got around him, you would get over it real quick."
Mr. Zornes loved traveling and sometimes, if he had the time, would start a trip on the spur of the moment.
"One day not long ago he said, 'Hey, let's go to Florida, '" recalled Mrs. Zornes. "We took a few minutes to pack, and we took off. We stayed in Florida three weeks."
Mr. Zornes was a past governor of Covington's Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 1469. He served in the Army in Korea and later served in the Army Reserve, retiring as a master sergeant.
Other survivors include daughters, Pam Huff of Independence and Deanne Zornes of Georgetown, Ohio; sons, Michael A. Zornes of Dunedin, Fla., and Richard L. Zornes and James A. Zornes, both of Independence; a sister, Jeanne Pence of Erlanger; and 10 granddaughters.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home in Latonia. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery in Taylor Mill.

Jack Beckner, 61, of Carrollton, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired security officer with Pinkertons, Cincinnati, and an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife, Priscilla Beckner; a son, Jack R. Beckner Jr. of Williamstown; a daughter, Elizabeth A. Floyd of Owenton; brothers, Larry Beckner and Gary McVay, both of London, and Lewis McVay of Ross, Ohio; a sister, Theresa Watkins of Somerset; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at House-Rawlings Funeral Home, London. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge, and from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at House-Rawlings Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rough Creek Cemetery, London. Thomas E. Deegan, 76, of Dillsboro, Ind., formerly of Newport, died Thursday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired industrial sales manager with Riemeier Lumber Co., Cincinnati, and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Deegan; daughters, Karen Adams of Columbus, Ohio, and Diana Deegan of Burlington; a son, Thomas M. Deegan of Cincinnati; a sister, Mary Gearding of Fort Thomas; a brother, Clarence Gardner of Cincinnati; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be in 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Spirit Church, Newport. Memorials are suggested to Newport Alumni Association, in care of Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, 822 York St., Newport, Ky. 41071.
Maurice Dempsey Earle, 83, of Berry, died Wednesday at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Lexington. He was a retired probation and parole officer with the state of Kentucky, a member of Berry Methodist Church and the Knights of Pythias, and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Wanda Lois Burgess Earle, preceded him in death.
Survivors include sons, Ronnie Earle of Cynthiana and Kenny Earle of Berry; a stepson, Charles Burgess of Berry; a brother, Kelly Earle Jr. of Berry; sisters, Jean Kersch of Dayton, Ohio, and Marjorie Pierce of Cynthiana; and two step-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Berry. Memorials are suggested to Berry Methodist Church, Berry, Ky. 41003; or the charity of the donor's choice.
Hiltrud Dienstbach Gordon, 82, of New Bern, N.C., formerly of Grant County, died Sunday at her home. She was a medical secretary.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Cotton Funeral Home, New Bern, is handling arrangements.
Ruth Elizabeth Bladen Haltman, 84, of Williamstown, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a homemaker. Stepsons, Oscar Haltman, Thomas Haltman and James Haltman, and a stepdaughter, Emma Vance, all preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Larry Edward Haltman of Guthrie, Okla.; daughters, Violet Sharpe of Falmouth, Loleta Mitchell of Williamstown and Joyce Martin of Cincinnati; a stepdaughter, Mary Yates of Fremont, Neb.; brothers, Frank Bladen of Ghent and Charles Bladen of Mount Eagle, Tenn.; sisters, Edna Bladen of Vevay, Ind., Stelma Johnson of Ghent and Della Miller of Tennessee; 13 grandchildren, 16 step-grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 6 p.m. today at Williamstown Cemetery. Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge, is handling arrangements.
James Laughlin, 91, formerly of Ludlow, died Thursday at Mercy Hospital-Clermont.
Arrangements are pending at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.
Phyllis May Roberts, 58, of Ludlow, died Tuesday at her home. She was a former student coordinator with the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, a former employee of Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati and a member of Ludlow Senior Citizens.
Survivors include a brother, Richard "Red" Roberts of Ludlow, nieces and nephews.
