John Hodge, Century Construction co-founder
John F. Hodge, co-founder of Century Construction, died at 5 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was 65.
Mr. Hodge was a mason, working at Interlake Steel in Newport, when he and friend Mike Mangeot decided to go into business for themselves, said his son, John Hodge of Villa Hills.
It was 1966 and they started Commercial Masonry. Two years later they added a third partner, Michael Ruh, and changed the company's name to Century Construction.
"One of their first jobs was a project for Champion Paper in Hamilton, Ohio, " said John Hodge. "They were tuck pointing and working on windows on a warehouse. It would have been a small job to a lot of people, but it was a real big deal to them."
The men worked long hours and became known for treating their customers right, John Hodge said.
"My dad was a bear on the outside, kind of gruff. But he had such a big heart. He taught me the value of hard work and doing right by your customers. When he did something, it was done right."
The company specializes in commercial and industrial building.
"We just finished the Hofbrauhaus in Newport and Jeff Ruby's Tropicana restaurant, " said John Hodge, who is vice president of Century.
Jack Hodge had been semi-retired for several months and spent much of his time on his houseboat in Florida.
"He loved the river, " his son said. Several years ago he piloted his houseboat from Fort Lauderdale to Cincinnati and back.
He was a member of the Riverfront Kiwanis, a former board member of Northern Kentucky Association for the Retarded, and served in the Army Reserves in the 1960s.
He was being treated for heart problems when he had a stroke this week.
