Charles Wendt, 'Train Man' at Johnny's Toys in Latonia
Charles "Ed" Wendt, a longtime buyer for Johnny's Toys in Latonia who was known as "The Train Man" to many of his customers, died Friday at his home. The Latonia resident was 67.
Wendt ran the hobby shop at Johnny's for 35 years.
His wife, Mary Sue Kleier Wendt, said her husband loved people and especially liked to talk with train enthusiasts about model trains.
"He just couldn't get enough hobbyists to come in (the store) and talk to about how to make their layouts and how to make trees, and how to do all that stuff, " she said.
Mr. Wendt was a model railroader in his youth and started at Johnny's as a part-time worker. He was so passionate about the hobby that the store owner asked him to join the staff full-time, his wife said.
"He built the hobby department into what it was, " Mrs. Wendt said. "From one display case to now a quarter of the store."
She said her husband was an avid artist who often painted portraits. But he mostly loved to paint scenery, trains, river pictures and ships in oils and acrylics, she said.
She said her husband also was a wonderful father who enjoyed spending time with his five grandchildren.
"He was the greatest guy in the world, " Mrs. Wendt said. The couple were married
for 43 years.
Mr. Wendt was a member of St. John's Church in Covington, and a former member of the Catholic Theatre Guild in Covington and the Third Order of St. Francis in Cincinnati.
Survivors in addition to his wife include sons, Tom Wendt and Alex Wendt, both of Latonia; a daughter, Nancy Rice of Fort Mitchell; and five grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Marcella Kay Bole Cain, 55, of Walton, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
She was a homemaker, a member of Grant County Baptist Temple and volunteered at Fourth District Elementary.
Survivors include her husband, Raymond E. Cain; a daughter, Linda Thompson of Latonia; sons, John F. Cain of Walton and Raymond Elvie Cain Jr. and Terry A. Cain Sr., both of Covington; his father, Roy Owen Bole of New Richmond, Ohio; sisters, Margaret Dalton of Morningview and Barbara Schmidt and Josephine Moore, both of New Richmond; a brother, Butch Bole of Ohio; 20 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Hughes Chapel Cemetery, Walton.

Jennings B. Creekmore, 79, of Ludlow, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice Unit, Covington.
He was an inspector retired from McGill Smith Engineers, Cincinnati, and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.
His wife, Louise Creekmore, died in 1997.
Survivors include sons, Bryan Creekmore of Ludlow and Danny Creekmore and Jimmy Creekmore, both of West Covington; daughters, Irene Kohne of Georgetown, Ohio, and Marion Houp, Kathleen Carroll and Alice Margolen, all of Ludlow; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Blessing will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

David Cleo Lancaster, 76, of Erlanger, died Friday at his home.
He was a technician for National Cash Register, a member of Erlanger United Methodist Church, Good Faith Masonic Lodge No. 95 F&AM and Wing Nuts Flying Club, and a Navy veteran of World War II.
A son, Daniel Lee Lancaster, died in 2001.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Lancaster; a daughter, Linda Herbstreet of Union; a son, David Michael Lancaster of American Samoa; brothers, Donald Ray Lancaster of Villa Hills and Kenneth Roy Lancaster of Independence; eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Services will be at noon Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home.

She was a book distributor for Thomson Learning. She was also a member of St. Paul Church, Florence.
Survivors include her daughters, Gina Taylor and Deanna O'Hara, both of Florence; sons, Michael O'Hara of Milton, Fla., Jimmy O'Hara of Erlanger and Tim O'Hara of Ludlow; sisters, Jo Ann Lyle of Ludlow and Linda Brown of Fort Thomas; a brother, Brad Colley of Cleves, Ohio; and three grandchildren.

She was a homemaker and former employee in food service at Carroll County Memorial Hospital and Carroll County High School.
She was also a member of Herrington Methodist Church in Bourbon County.
Survivors include her husband, Marion "Red" Platt; a daughter, Pamela Sue Platt-Siekman of Ghent; sons, Michael William Platt of Carrollton, Roger Dale Platt of Ghent and Lonnie Darrell Platt of Crestwood; brothers, Charles Gray of Lancaster and Larry Gray of Paris; and six grandchildren.

Lelia Capps "Hester" Spaulding, 95, of Butler, died Wednesday at River Valley Nursing Home, Butler.
Her husband, Lawrence Spaulding, a daughter, Pauline Figgins, stepsons, Robert Spaulding and Lloyd "Bud" Spaulding, and stepdaughters, Wilma House, Neva Reed and Mabel Spaulding, all preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Dwight Spaulding of Fort Wayne, Ind., Delbert Spaulding of Bellevue and Jim Spaulding of Dale, Ind.; a daughter, Marge DiBlasi of Oswego, N.Y.; a stepson, William Spaulding of Venus, Fla.; stepdaughters, Vivian Lawson of Michigan and Alleen Mapes of Rome City, Ind.; and a sister, Irene Reams of Orlando.
