Madge Dolwick, tutored for more than 30 years
Madge E. Dolwick taught for more than 30 years, helping hundreds of students go on to become lawyers, engineers and dentists.
And all without leaving her home.
What started as an effort to help a neighbor child who was having trouble in school evolved into a near full-time job tutoring youngsters for the next three decades.
"A lot of people said they would never have gotten where they are today if not for Mrs. Dolwick, " said her daughter, Patricia Foxworthy of Independence.
Mrs. Dolwick, 86, of Hebron, died at 10:10 p.m. Saturday at Villaspring Health Care Center, Erlanger.
Mrs. Dolwick got started tutoring after her own two children were out of high school. Her clientele grew as her reputation spread.
"She never got frustrated; she had a lot of patience with them, " Foxworthy said. "And if they did good, she always had a treat for them."
Her students came from Mary Queen of Heaven parochial school and the Boone County and Erlanger school systems. Mostly, she taught grade-school-age children.
Often, she would meet ex-students when she was out in the community. Their question of her was always the same: "Mrs. Dolwick, do you remember me?"
She kept at it well into her 70s, retiring only when she had to begin taking care of her husband, Robert Earle Dolwick, when he became ill. He died in 1999.
Mrs. Dolwick was a member of Hebron Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir for more than 50 years and taught Sunday school, and Hebron Homemakers.
