Zona Simpson, co-founded funeral home in Covington

Zona Simpson, wife of Covington's first black city commissioner and mother of state Rep. Arnold Simpson, died Tuesday at her home in Southgate. She was 75.

Mrs. Simpson and her late husband, James Simpson, co-founded the Jones and Simpson Funeral Home in Covington. A licensed funeral director, she took on more duties in the business after she retired from a full-time job at the Covington Municipal Housing Authority in the late 1980s. She was president of the funeral home at the time of her death.

"She got involved in the funeral business through my dad, " said Arnold Simpson, a Covington Democrat. "She was always involved in the business, but after she retired she took on a more active role."

Her husband, who died in 1999, became the first black elected to the Covington City Commission in 1970. He served out an unexpired term on the commission in the early 1990s.

Though Mrs. Simpson never ran for office, her son said she instilled a sense of civic duty in him, his brothers and sister.

"My mother was the center in all of the children's upbringing. My father was always working two or three jobs trying to get the funeral home started, " Arnold Simpson said. "As a consequence, my mother was the force in raising the kids with the values we have today relating to civic responsibility."

A Somerset native, Mrs. Simpson lived in Covington for more than 50 years.
