Mary Denise Wigman, Good Shepherd sister
Sister Mary Denise Wigman spent much of her life helping children improve their lives.
To the end, she remembered everyone last one of them. Most of the children remembered her, too.
"She loved to have us read letters from some of the people she taught. A lot of them kept in touch, " said Sister Elise Kramer, a member of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd in Fort Thomas who helped care for Sister Wigman the past three years at the order's assisted living nursing home.
"Just last week, three of her former students came down from Michigan to see her."
Sister Wigman, R.G.S., 83, of Fort Thomas, died at 10:25 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a child-care worker, social worker and an administrator with the Sisters of the Good Shepherd.
From 1941 to 1974, Sister Wigman worked in Michigan, helping to administer programs for troubled adolescent girls. After that, she filled several other posts for her order.
Sisters and adults who sought help from Sister Wigman as children noted her creative and sometimes energetic ability to associate with young people. "She always had a very good time with the children, " Sister Kramer said.
One of Sister Wigman's most noted accomplishments saw her convince a local fireman one winter to spray water on a sports field in order that children might skate and slide on it.
"She was always interested in people, even when she was sick, " Sister Kramer said. "She always took time to help them with their problems."
