Martha Strassburger, grocery store owner

Martha B. Strassburger, 96, of Fort Thomas and formerly of Bellevue, who ran Martha's Grocery for 43 years in Bellevue, died Friday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home in Fort Thomas.

She was the owner and operator of Martha's Grocery at the corner of Fairfield and Lafayette in Bellevue from the 1930s to the 1970s.

Mrs. Strassburger was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Bellevue, Christian Mothers at Sacred Heart and the Altar Society. She was a former member of the board of directors of Madonna House in Fort Mitchell.

"She was very determined and hard-working, " said Mrs. Strassburger's son, Leo Strassburger of Wilder. "She spent a lot of hours running that store.

"My father was a construction foreman, but was injured at work and was semi-invalid. She ran the business. She also had all us kids to raise.

"She started the store during the Depression and helped people out by letting them buy things on credit. She was a nice person and very religious."

Mrs. Strassburger's husband, Joseph Strassburger, died in 1959. She was preceded in death by two of her six children.

Other survivors include daughters Martha Jones of Dayton and Rose Schutzman of Fort Thomas; a son, Richard Strassburger of Crescent Springs; 14 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be tonight (Monday night) from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Dobbling Funeral Home in Bellevue.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Bellevue.

Memorials may be made to Carmel Manor Nursing home, 100 Carmel Manor Road, Fort Thomas, Ky., 41075, or to Madonna House, 25 Orphanage Road, Fort Mitchell, Ky., 41017.

Delores Mae Buckner, 69, of Independence, died May 10 at her home. She was a self-employed cook.

Survivors include a brother, Robert McMains of Eubanks; sisters, Carol McMains and Linda McMains, both of Cincinnati; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling arrangements.

Isabella Cox, 86, of Newport, died Wednesday at Charleston General Hospital in Charleston, W.Va. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include sons, Donald E. Cox of Havelock, N.C., James M. Cox of California, and David C. Cox of Chino Valley, Ariz.; sisters, Della Cox of Tampa, Fla., and Louise Howard of Southgate; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were Saturday at Wesley Chapel Cemetery, California. Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, handled arrangements.

Helen Lee Elliston, 72, of Hebron, died at 9:35 p.m. Saturday at Villaspring Health Care Center, Erlanger. She was a homemaker and a member of Hebron Lutheran Church and the Hebron Homemakers. She was a member of the church Helpers Circle.

Survivors include her husband, Jim R. Elliston of Hebron; sons, Alan Ellison and David Elliston, both of Hebron, Larry Elliston of Covington and Ronnie Elliston of Florence; daughters, Mary Poland of Florence, Sandy Lucas of Louisville and Pam Brison of Florence; sisters, Barbara Dye of Burlington and Lucille Turner of Florence; 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hebron Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron, and from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Hebron Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Hebron Lutheran cemetery Memorial Garden Fund, 3140 Limaburg Road, Hebron, Ky. 41048. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron, is handling arrangements.

Ruth Ann Faust, 67, of Fort Thomas, died at 2:20 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a former member of St. Vincent DePaul Church, Newport.

Survivors include brothers, Ron Faust of Alexandria and Chuck Faust of Cold Spring; nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Carmel Manor, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Entombment will be in St. Stephen Mausoleum, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Carmel Manor, 100 Carmel Manor Road, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport, is handling arrangements.

Kimberly Ann Gaiser, 45, of Bromley, died Saturday at her home. She was a homemaker. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Ludlow. A son, Joshua Gaiser, died in 1987.

Survivors include her husband, Howard Gaiser; a son, Jason Gaiser of Louisville; a sister, Vicki Palmer of Ludlow and a brother, Craig Skidmore of Walton.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Scleroderma Foundation, 7811 Laurel Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45243.

Stella Frances Geiger, 77, of Las Vegas, formerly of Covington, died at 11 p.m. Wednesday at Mountainview Hospital in Las Vegas. She was a retired secretary. Her husband, James W. Geiger, died in 1998.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Massie of Albuquerque; sons, James W. Geiger and Chris Geiger, both of Las Vegas; sisters, Mary Storer and Joan Miller, both of Covington; and two grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Jessie T. Holt, 66, of Grants Lick, died at 9:51 a.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired mechanic with Ceramic Coating and Tile Co., Wilder. A daughter, Crystal Holt, preceded him in death.

Survivors include daughters, Charletta Holt of Covington, Marcella Holt of Fort Thomas and Barb Lyvers of Alexandria; sons, Dwayne Holt of Highland Heights, Matthew Holt of Okeechobee, Fla., Tony Holt of Alexandria and Wendell Holt of California; sisters, Marlene Holt and France Holt, both of Falmouth, Ula Decker and Barbara Decker, both of Grants Lick, and Darlene Phillips and Bonnie Decker, both of Mount Vernon; a brother, Donald Holt of Falmouth; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

William James Knox, 91, of Bellevue, died Thursday at Woodcrest Manor, Elsmere. He was a retired stationary engineer with Cincinnati Gas & Electric and a former member of Fort Thomas Baptist Church. His wife, Ollie Knox, and a daughter, Peggy Perry, both preceded him in death.

Survivors include daughters, Marilyn Koett of Centerville, Ohio, Bonnie Blue of Bangs, Texas, Donna Perry of St. Augustine, Fla., and Linda Hyles of Wilder; sons, William James Knox Jr. of Covington and Kelly Knox of Independence; brothers, Bobby Knox of Bradenton, Fla., and Harold Knox of West Chester, Ohio; 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Chandler Maloney, 9 days, son of Kevin and Anna Maloney of Cincinnati, died Saturday at his home.

Other survivors include a brother, Matthew Maloney, at home; grandparents, Tammy Henson of Cincinnati, and Michael and Ruth Ann Maloney of Cincinnati; great-grandparents, Harry and Ava Maloney of Cincinnati, and Leslie Rucker of Youngstown, Ohio; and great-great-grandmother, Ruth Martin of Wind Ridge, Pa.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Peach Grove Cemetery, Peach Grove.

Jack Martin, 70, of Butler, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a teacher and coach with Grants Lick Elementary School, a farmer, a deacon with Christ Church of Eastside Park in Butler and an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Estelle Durham Martin; sons, David Martin of Edgewood and Gary Martin of Science Hill; a daughter, Susan Cox of Butler; her mother, Edith Martin of Mount Vernon; a brother, Bill Martin of Mount Vernon; sisters, Jean Shoemaker of Mount Vernon, Joyce Conner and Patricia Pyles, both of El Paso; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Peoples Funeral Home, Butler. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Peach Grove Cemetery, Pendleton County.

Bob "Mac" McCarthy, 55, of Covington, died at 1:20 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a retired line technician with Cincinnati Bell Telephone, and a member of St. Barbara Church in Erlanger, Covington Moose Lodge No. 1469 and Turners Hall, Covington.

Survivors include a son, Michael W. McCarthy of Covington; a sister, Petty Meyer of Florence; a brother, John W. McCarthy of Covington; and four grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Cross Church, Latonia. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Prayers will be at 11:54 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, 8899 Brookside Ave., West Chester, Ohio 45069.

Judith Points Ross, 82, of Tulsa, Okla., formerly of Dry Ridge, died Wednesday at her home. She was a retired employee of Amoco and was an elder of Southminster Presbyterian Church in Tulsa. Her husband, Charles F. Ross, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Charlene Warden of Tulsa; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were this morning at Southminster Presbyterian Church, Tulsa. Ninde Funeral Home, Tulsa, handled arrangements.

Donald Paul Steinman, 72, of Cold Spring, died at 8 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a color coordinator with Deluxe Engraving, Cincinnati, and a member of St. Joseph Church in Cold Spring, Elks Newport Lodge, the Campbell County YMCA and NAMI of Northern Kentucky.

Survivors include his wife, Dixie Newman Steinman; a daughter, Cheri Lynn Hagedorn of Highland Heights; sons, Mark D. Steinman of Cincinnati, David W. Steinman and Daniel P. Steinman, both of Alexandria; and five grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Prayers will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Entombment will be in St. Stephen Mausoleum, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219.

Willis Trent, 81, of Cold Spring, died Sunday at his home. He was a retired foreman with Duro Block Co., Cincinnati. A son, Willie Thomas Trent, died in 1994.

Survivors include his wife, Phoebie Trent; sons, Jerry Trent and Arlow Trent, both of Brooksville; daughters, Bonnie Lindon of Dayton, Mary Bihr of Cold Spring and Janice Cummins of West Palm Beach, Fla.; brothers, Earl Trent of Georgetown and Gene Trent of Frankfort; a sister, Wanda Sullivan of Middletown, Ohio; 15 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Lillian M. VanBenschoten, 79, of Alexandria, died Sunday at St. St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring.

Survivors include her husband, Benjamin VanBenschoten; daughters, Marlene Bobb of Butler, Donna Elliott of Erlanger and Barbara VanBenschoten of Alexandria; sons, Robert VanBenschoten of Alexandria, Ron VanBenschoten of Florence and Thom VanBenschoten of Cincinnati; a sister, Jean Grever of Bellevue; 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Church, 4011 Alexandria Pike, Cold Spring, Ky. 41076.

Stanley Webb, 72, of Carrollton, died Wednesday at Carroll County Hospital, Carrollton. He was a retired nursery worker and a member of Worthville Baptist Church.

Survivors include a sister, Roberta Bishop of Carrollton.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Warsaw Cemetery. Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw, is handling arrangements.

Louise Wilson, 97, of Warsaw, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a farmer and a member of Warsaw Christian Church. Her husband, James Beckham Wilson, died in 1970.

Survivors include a son, James Craig Wilson of Warsaw; a daughter, Shirley Holderby of Florence; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 6 p.m. today at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Burial will be in Warsaw Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Warsaw Christian Church, 207 W. High St., Warsaw, Ky. 41095.
