George Boh, farmed for much of 91 years
George H. Boh farmed most of his 91 years, and when he became too old to farm, he still raised a garden.
Just two weeks before he died, the Richwood resident was working in his garden. By the time he died, on Sunday at the St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington, his tomato plants were ready for transplanting.
His rows of corn, beans and broccoli had a head start on those of his fellow gardeners. And his children were already picking his strawberries for themselves.
Even after his nine children were all grown, Mr. Boh supplied them with seedlings for their own gardens, said his daughter, Mary Brady of Petersburg.
Mr. Boh was born on a farm his uncle and aunt owned that is now part of the Thomas More College campus in Crestview Hills. He grew up on a farm in Villa Hills.
He and his wife, Alma Lankheit Boh, raised their children on a tobacco and dairy farm across the road from what is now Turfway Park. He farmed there until the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport bought the property. Then he farmed land in southwestern Boone County, near the Ohio River.
His family was very important to him. Until his health declined, he hosted monthly birthday parties for the immediate family, typically drawing 50 to 60 people, Brady said.
"He always thought of us before he thought of himself, " she said.
A lifelong Reds fan, Mr. Boh attended his first and only game in the Great American Ball Park two weeks ago, in his wheelchair.
A very religious man, he prayed the rosary daily. On the day he died, he tried to say it with his family even though he was too weak, Brady said.
"He was a heck-of-a good man, " she said.
