Douglas Bryant, giving man known for ease with people
Douglas W. Bryant was the conservation officer all the newspaper, television and radio reporters wanted to talk to.
"He conversed very well with people, " said his sister-in-law, Pauline Hughes. "He was always the (public affairs) guy for the TV and the newspapers."
Mr. Bryant, who died Monday in a crash on Interstate 75 in Fort Mitchell, had experience with public speaking.
Before the Villa Hills resident joined the former Kentucky State Water Patrol 14 years ago, Mr. Bryant taught auto mechanics at the former Northern Kentucky Vocational School for about five years.
The 62-year-old knew a lot about many subjects, Hughes said, but he didn't flaunt his knowledge.
Born in Eubanks, Mr. Bryant moved to Cincinnati and then to Ludlow, where he graduated from Ludlow High School. He served in the Army, and, after a stint as a teacher, joined the Bromley Police Department and then the water patrol.
"He was well known up and down the river. Every marine operator knew him. If he missed a day's work, they always would say, 'Where's Doug?'" Hughes said.
When he wasn't patrolling the water, Mr. Bryant liked to ride his motorcycle, a Honda Goldwing. He participated in many benefits for riders, Hughes said.
"He was generally a giving person, " she said.
He also helped his wife, Sherry, with her hairdressing business, J&J; Hair Fashion in Covington.
He was a devoted husband to her and a devoted father to their daughter, Kiana.
"They never wanted anything that he wasn't there to give, " Hughes said.
Mr. Bryant was a member of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 120 and Bradford Lodge No. 123 F&AM and the National Rifle Association.
