John E. Heidrich, retired pharmacist
John E. Heidrich, who owned a pharmacy in Park Hills, didn't settle back into an easy chair when he retired at age 65.
He volunteered in the pharmacy at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington and worked as a "floater, " helping out other pharmacists in Northern Kentucky.
Mr. Heidrich, 71, of Edgewood, died Thursday at his home.
His family said Mr. Heidrich had a great sense of humor and was always very punctual.
"He was very outgoing, " said Dorothy Schuler Heidrich, his wife of 48 years. "John was never at a loss for words. He was always happy.
"He was the most wonderful father and provider, " she said. "He was very considerate and kind and always concerned about his family."
Mr. Heidrich worked as a pharmacist for 40 years and operated the Park Hills Pharmacy from 1964 to 1986. After he retired, he volunteered in the pharmacy at St. Elizabeth.
He owned a houseboat named the "Lady Love" and never passed up an opportunity to take his family on the Ohio River. He once took his grandchildren, to their delight, downriver through the Meldahl Dam locks, his wife said.
He also owned a 1929 Model A Ford, a four-door model, which he had bought as a junker and restored.
"Even the floor boards were rotten, " his wife said. "He restored the entire car. It was beautiful."
Mr. Heidrich regularly drove the car in Park Hills and Edgewood parades.
His favorite hobby, however, was taking care of his yard, his wife said.
"He would cut the grass twice or sometimes three times a week, " she said.
