Earl J. Capito, could get laugh from anybody
Relatives and friends of Earl J. Capito jumped at the chance to talk about the man they called "everyone's papaw."
"I'm 41 years old, and I've never in my life ever heard him so much as raise his voice, " said Amy Ostendorf of Morning View, his granddaughter. "I've never known a more Christian man in my life, and I never will."
"He was the most loving person in the world, " said Melissa Oliver of Florence, his great-niece.
"I don't remember ever spending a bad time with him, " said Michael Ostendorf of Blanchester, Ohio, his great-grandson. "He was hysterical. He could get a laugh out of anybody, on your worst day."
"I thought of him as 89 years of life experience, " said Anita Lucas of Morning View, a close family friend. "I respected what he had to say because of his life experience."
Mr. Capito, who died at his home in Latonia on Wednesday, was a retired agent for Interocean Insurance Co.
In his spare time, he loved to fish, which he often did at a weekend getaway spot he had on the Ohio River near Warsaw. He also served as a Boy Scout leader for 28 years.
His family described him as a man devoted to his family, his grandchildren and his wife, Dorothy Wolfe Capito. "He was married
67 years and was still very much in love with his wife, " Amy Ostendorf said.
He had a strong Christian faith and served as a deacon at Latonia Baptist Church. "He read his Bible every day, but he wasn't the type to shove it down your throat, " she said.
Oliver remembers her mother buying her a toy shaving kit when she was 5, and Mr. Capito letting her pretend to shave him for about four hours. "He just let us do whatever we wanted to do with him, " Oliver said.
He liked to tell stories of his Navy service during World War II, she said, including being in Italy when Mussolini was killed.
"He was a great storyteller, and he didn't know a stranger, " she said.
