John Kupper, known as 'Latonia Egg Man'
John W. Kupper of Latonia lived to be 100 years old, and for most of those years he was fondly known as "The Latonia Egg Man."
When he was 14 years old, he asked his parents to buy him some chickens; the rest is Latonia history.
Mr. Kupper raised chickens -- sometimes 300 at a time -- and sold eggs until he was 91 years old.
"He was proud to be the Latonia Egg Man, " said Mr. Kupper's daughter, Virginia L. Kaufman of Edgewood.
Mr. Kupper died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.
He made a living as a machinist with the American Tool & Die Co. in Cincinnati, but he was best known for the eggs he sold throughout the Latonia neighborhood.
He also raised vegetables in his 33rd Street garden and sold them to friends and neighbors. He was especially praised for the quality of his tomatoes.
"He loved gardening and enjoyed flowers, " said Mrs. Kaufman. "But he was mostly interested in chickens and eggs, so that's what he did. He kept his chicken house so clean that you could eat a meal off the floor."
Mrs. Kaufman there were three reasons why he lived to be 100.
"He never smoked, he never drank, and he never owned a car, " she said. "He walked everywhere."
Mr. Kupper was the oldest member of Holy Cross Church in Latonia and was a life-long Cincinnati Reds fan.
