Sister Ann Mary Cordier, compassionate, forgiving
When Sister Ann Mary Cordier was in Louisville once for a congregational gathering, she and a companion were mugged as they were returning from Mass.
Instead of being angry over the broken arm she suffered, Sister Cordier felt called to pray for her attacker. She thought the experience a special grace for her, because her attacker probably needed prayer.
"She was a very good example for people who want vengeance on other people today, like in Iraq, " said Sister Mary Komar, a spokeswoman for the Sisters of the Good Shepherd in Fort Thomas, Sister Cordier's congregation. "She was a very forgiving person."
Sister Cordier died Friday at Pelletier Hall in Fort Thomas. She was 92.
She joined the Sisters of the Good Shepherd in Carthage, Cincinnati, where she made her profession in June 1938. She served as a teacher, high school principal and school psychologist, and even played the organ for religious services. After her retirement, she served as a sacristan.
"She was a well-rounded person in many respects, " Sister Komar said.
Sister Cordier's years of service took her to the Cincinnati neighborhood of Price Hill, Cleveland, Columbus and Grand Rapids, Mich.
She was an opinionated person not easily swayed by trends. For example, she refused to change her habit when the Second Vatican Council allowed nuns to wear other clothes.
But she respected others' opinions and smiled easily, Sister Komar said. She was a very good conversationalist and very well read.
Her favorite piece of literature was "The Hound of Heaven, " Francis Thompson's poem of his flight from Christ, and Christ's pursuit of him.
Her nephew, the Rev. Michael Cordier, will officiate at her funeral Mass, which is set for 11 a.m. today at the Pelletier Hall Chapel.
