Monsignor Harry Welp, 'loved being a priest'
Monsignor Harry Joseph Welp, a native of Bellevue who held a variety of Catholic church and school positions from 1945 until his retirement as a priest in 1982, died Monday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington. He was 83.
A graduate of Covington Catholic High School and Xavier University, Monsignor Welp was ordained in 1945 by the Most Rev. William T. Mulloy at the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington.
His first assignment was to teach at Covington Latin School in Covington and to serve as an assistant pastor at Blessed Sacrament Church in Fort Mitchell.
In 1946 he taught at Notre Dame Academy in Covington and in 1947 became director of the Diocesan Youth Ministry in Covington.
Monsignor Welp was a graduate student at the University in Notre Dame in 1950 and returned to Northern Kentucky in 1951 to teach at Villa Madonna College in Covington and to be assistant pastor at St. Bernard Church in Dayton.
In 1952, he became editor of the local Catholic newspaper, the Messenger, and served as chaplain at St. Anne Convent in Melbourne.
He became pastor at St. Francis de Sales in Newport in 1965 and also was spiritual moderator of the Catholic Council of Men and Holy Name Society in Covington.
"He loved being a priest, " said Paul Bondick, a nephew from Villa Hills. "He was very loyal and faithful to the church.
"He was traditional. He went with what the Pope in Rome wanted priests to go by. He didn't deviate from things. He was true to his beliefs in the church, and there were no gray areas."
For relaxation, Monsignor Welp enjoyed swimming at Sunlight Pool at Coney Island amusement park in Cincinnati. He had an especially soft spot in his heart for animals, particularly dogs.
Survivors include his sister, Jean Risch of Taylor Mill, and nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony Church in Bellevue. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in St. Pius X cemetery in Erlanger.

Irene Amburgy, 83, of Newport, died Monday at Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation Center, Highland Heights. She was a retired housekeeper with the Queen City Club and a member of Price Hill Baptist Church, Price Hill, Ohio. Her husband, Charles Amburgy, died in 1989.
Survivors include a daughters, Barbara Coffelt of Covedale, Ohio, and Shirley Stephenson of Independence; a son, Donald Amburgy of Cannelton, Ind.; brothers, Norman Moore and Roy Moore, both of Franklin, Ohio; sisters, Ornell Isbel of Dayton, Ohio, Thelma Logsdon of Leesburg, Fla., and Mildred Throckmorton of Lebanon; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Highland Heights. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Dorothy Bersagel, 80, of Latonia, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Allen Bersagel, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sisters, Lorena W. Bickers of Latonia and Virdie Crawford of Independence.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of services Thursday at the funeral home. Ann E. DeGroot, 81, of Edgewood, died Saturday at her home. She was a teacher. Her husbands, Art DeGroot and George Dravillas, preceded her in death.

John W. Childers, 66, of Falmouth, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.

Doris Ballinger Martin Dreher, 67, of Brooksville, died Friday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. She was a retired medical receptionist. Her first husband, Tim Martin, died in 1983, and her second husband, Bernard Dreher, died in 1999.
Survivors include a son, Tim Martin of Covington; daughters, Pamela Marlar of Price Hill, Ohio, Melissa Cater of Mendenhall, Miss., Jennifer O'Donell of Brooksville, Joyce Ketron of Independence and Rachel Thompson of Loveland, Ohio; brothers, Wayne Ballinger of Independence and Ronnie Ballinger of Crittenden; a sister, Shirley Neuspickle of Demossville; and nine grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Hope, 1 West McDonald Parkway, Maysville, Ky. 41056.
Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Poe Hamilton, 70, of Dover, died at 1:30 a.m. Monday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. She was a teacher retired from the Bracken County Board of Education. Her husband, Victor Louis "Butch" Hamilton, died in 1970.
Survivors include a daughter, Jo Ann Greenlee of Germantown; a son, Mark Hamilton of Maysville; four grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Germantown United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Palmer Funeral Home, Germantown. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Maysville.
Camille Constance Heller, 86, of Owenton, died Thursday at her home. She was a cafeteria manager retired from Illinois Bell Telephone Co., Libertyville, Ill., and a member of Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church, Gulf Breeze, Fla. Her husband, Fred Aloysius Heller, died in 2001.
Survivors include daughters, Marianne Schulten of Owenton, Rosemarie White of Clearwater, Fla., and Margi DeStefano of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Services were Tuesday at Rose Lawn Funeral Home, Gulf Breeze. Burial was in Barrancas National Cemetery, Pensacola, Fla.

Dorothy Harriet Lind, 87, formerly of Ludlow, died Saturday at North Ridge Care Center, New Hope, Minn.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Lind; a son, Richard Lind of Champlin, Minn.; brothers, Harry Glaser Jr. of Erlanger and William Glaser of Bartlett, Tenn.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Harry Boone Nicholson Sr., 96, of Fort Thomas, died Sunday at Highlands of Fort Thomas.
He was retired from Armco Inc., Ashland, after having been an assistant vice president at the Middletown, Ohio, headquarters and general manager of the Ashland Works, past president of the Northeastern Kentucky Sportsman's Club, past vice president of the statewide League of Kentucky Sportsmen, served as a director of the YMCA, Associated Industries of Kentucky, Landsdowne Mental Health Board, the Advisory Board of King's Daughters and Sons Home, Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, Ashland Chamber of Commerce, and the Third National Bank of Ashland, served as a lay member of the Long Range and Planning Commission of the Kentucky Bar Association, was a member of the American Iron and Steel Institute, president of Bellefonte Country Club, and was the Ashland Jaycees "Boss of the Year" in 1969.
His first wife, Eva Louise Neekamp Nicholson, died in 1943, second wife, Zeris Ellen Martin Nicholson, died in 1996, and a daughter, Margaret Point, died in 1935.
Survivors include daughters, Marie Louise Hissam of Ashland, Leann Ward of Cold Spring and Pamela Harkins Rose of Wilmington, N.C.; a son, Harry Boone Nicholson Jr. of Bemus Point, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Church, Ashland. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Steen Funeral Home, Ashland. Ruth Anna McCauley Phillips, 86, of Newport, formerly of Fort Thomas, died Monday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, Highland Heights. Her husband, Ashton Phillips, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a brother, Marshall McAuley of Cynthiana.

Addie Mae Daugherty Tipton, 95, of Florence, died at 10:17 a.m. Saturday at Colonial Gardens, Florence.

Paul "Rusty" Wilson, 78, of Falmouth, died Sunday at his son's home in Falmouth. He was a retired bricklayer, member of Falmouth Christian Church, American Legion Post No. 109, and VFW, president of Bricklayers Union Local No. 2, Newport, Cub Scout master, and a Navy veteran of World War II. His first wife, Louise Fogle Wilson, died in 1986, and second wife, Norma Martin Wilson, died in 2002.
Survivors include a son, Paul Wilson of Falmouth; a daughter, Linda Wilson Simons of Carlisle; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
