George 'Pop' Beighle, milk hauler

George "Pop" Wilford Beighle spent the 1940s and '50s hauling milk when that involved the labor-intensive process of wrestling large cans on and off the truck.

"It was hard work, but he was a big guy, " said Mr. Beighle's daughter, Lois "Sissy" McElroy of Walton.

When that business was modernized with refrigerated trucks, Mr. Beighle got out of it. But not out of trucking. He started his own business hauling gasoline. He later went to work for Tresler Oil Co., from which he retired in 1977.

Mr. Beighle, of Piner, died at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport. He was 88.

Her father's milk routes ran through Pendleton, Kenton and Grant counties, said McElroy, and he dealt with three dairies: Latonia Springs in Latonia, Sealtest in Cincinnati and French Bauer in Newport. He worked the routes with his son, Wilford Blaine Beighle of Anderson Township, Ohio, who survives.

After he retired, Mr. Beighle fished, gardened and kept the two acres on which he and his wife lived "all perfectly mowed, " McElroy said.

Her father was a hard worker, she said, who had little use for pretense.

"He was very point blank. He told it like it was, " she said. "You could take it or leave it. He was a stern person."
