Crystal Taylor, treated all like family
Crystal Euline Taylor grew up in an orphanage and spent her life treating everyone she met like family.
She cared for elderly women and opened her home to teens. "All of my friends called her mom, " said her daughter, Jeanette Kilgore of Dayton.
Mrs. Taylor, of Newport, died Thursday at Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation Center in Highland Heights. She was 73.
Mrs. Taylor was orphaned at age 5 and grew up in an orphanage with her brother and sister. "She was the oldest and she acted like a little mother to them, " said Jeanette Kilgore.
Mrs. Taylor and her husband, the late Charles A. Taylor, had 10 children and lived much of their life in rural Campbell County. "I remember sawing wood for the stove, " Jeanette Kilgore said. "My mother worked hard. We always had good meals. On weekends she'd cook big breakfasts."
Mrs. Taylor played guitar and piano and loved religious music, her daughter said.
The family moved to Newport more than 25 years ago and Mrs. Taylor was active in the Baptist church. She worked in the church thrift shop and helped care for older people.
"If someone was sick, she'd go there and help them, " her daughter said. "She tried to help anybody she could."
Often she would bring hot, homemade bread.
"She made the best homemade bread ever. People were always asking her to bake them some bread, " her daughter said.
Her husband and a daughter, Mary Louise Calhoun, both died in 1995. A son, Jerome Charles Taylor, died in 1996.
Mrs. Taylor had diabetes and in the last few years lived with her son, Lawrence, in Newport. Earlier this year she developed congestive heart failure and was hospitalized.
Other survivors include daughters, Carletta Hensley of Newport, Deviona McQueen of Lexington, Kim Rhoden of Ashland and Tonya Smith of California; sons, Mike Taylor of Lexington and Anthony Taylor of Newport; a sister, Maerene Shields of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Lawrence Wells of Slade; 31 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association, 8899 Brookside Ave., West Chester, Ohio 45103.
Michael W. Day, 44, of Trenton, Ohio, formerly of Williamstown, died Thursday at his home. He was a Realtor for Star One Realtors, Trenton.
Survivors include his wife, Jackie Campbell Day; a son, Brandon M. Day of Williamstown; daughters, Sheena K. Day of Williamstown and Caroline M. Day of Trenton; stepsons, Ed Holweger, Chris Holweger, Bob Holweger and Sam Holweger, all of Trenton; parents, Nancy Hall Day and Bob Day; brothers, Tommy Day of Erlanger and Patrick Day and Timmy Day, both of Dry Ridge; and a grandson.
Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Middletown, 324 Wilmington Ave., Dayton, Ohio 45420, attn.: Donation Department.
Wilamina Minnie Ann Gasser "Granny" Fritz, 93, of Cynthiana, died Friday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana. She was a homemaker, a former member of the St. Edward Church and a member of the Webster Avenue Church of God, Cynthiana. Her husband, Conrad Boyd Fritz Sr., died in 2002.
Survivors include a son, Conrad Boyd Fritz Jr. of Harrison County; two granddaughters and a great granddaughter.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St Edward Cemetery, Cynthiana. Memorials are suggested to Webster Avenue Church of God, 301 Webster Ave., Cynthiana, Ky. 41031.
Bessie Cook Smith-Tapp, 83, of Carlisle, died Friday at Nicholas County Hospital. She was a retired Jockey International employee, and a member of the Rose Hill United Methodist Church and Rose Hill United Methodist Women. Her husbands, Roy T. Smith and Allie Tapp; a daughter, Nancy Louise Smith; a son, Jesse C. Smith; and two grandchildren, Jennifer Lynn Jones and Roy T. Smith Jr., all preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Larry T. Smith of Trenton, Tenn., and David L. Smith of Carlisle; daughters, Rita Smith Robbins of Cynthiana and Rhoda Jones of Trenton; a sister, Alice Whitaker of Cynthiana; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.
Jack D. Spencer, 78, of Cynthiana, died Thursday at Edgemont Manor, Cynthiana. He was a retired carpenter. Survivors include friends, Carrie Tilton of Harrison County and Connie Fugate of Cynthiana.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of services Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.
Melvin Clifford Stewart, 79, of Worthville, died Friday at VA Hospital, Thomson and Hood Center, Lexington. He was a mechanic at Elf Atochem (formerly M & T Chemicals), a member of Worthville Baptist Church and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Nina Hunt Stewart; sons, Roy Thomas Stewart of Georgetown and Nathan Ray Stewart of New Albany, Ind.; and daughters, Melinda Kemper of Lexington and Jenny Dwyer of Florence.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Worthville Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Burial will be in Dallasburg Masonic Cemetery, Wheatley.

Thelma Thompson, 81, of Berry, died Friday at her home. Arrangements are pending at Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry.
Dennis Allen Wainscott, 51, of Glencoe, died Thursday at Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington. He was a construction worker and a member of Pleasant Home Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Chad Wainscott of Elsmere; a brother, Kenneth Wainscott of Paris; and sisters, Peggy Cook and Judy Holbert, both of Glencoe.

Lula Gayle Wingham, 87, of Ghent, died Thursday at Norton Audubon Hospital, Louisville. She was a homemaker and former factory worker for Carrollton Redryer.
Survivors include a son, Ed Wingham of Tipp City, Ohio; a daughter, Ellen Mefford of Paragould, Ark.; a sister, Ellen D. Breeck of Carrollton; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Lottie Bernette Wood, 73, of Newport, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired clerk for Rinks Department Store. Her husband, Billy Wood, died in 1995.
Survivors include daughters, Tracey Hall of Covington, Gayla Wood of Orlando, Fla., Janelle Ziegler of Alexandria and Rhonda Burgin and Michelle McWhorter, both of Newport; and 10 grandchildren.
