Vivien Augur, longtime Kenton court reporter
Vivien Augur was working at Pogue's department store in Cincinnati when she got an offer she couldn't refuse: Learn how to be a court reporter and get paid more for taking the course than she was making at the store.
Mrs. Augur jumped at the chance, in the process launching a career that spanned 32 years and saw her work for five judges, a prosecutor and a master commissioner in Kenton County as a court reporter or secretary.
"She enjoyed what she was doing, " said her husband, Dennis Augur. "She was in a position to help people by being kind to them."
Mrs. Augur, of Union, died at 11:45 p.m. Sunday at her home in Union. She was 58.
Among the judges she worked for were Kenton Circuit Judges James Gilliece, Frank Trusty and Patricia Summe. She retired as Judge Summe's secretary in September 2000.
Mrs. Augur and her husband took advantage of their increased free time to travel, with trips to the West Coast, Canada and the Virgin Islands.
Five weeks before she died, they went to Mexico.
"We had a good time the last two years, " her husband said.
That was despite the fact that she was diagnosed with cancer in 1995 and had been battling it off and on since then. The disease started in her breast and spread to her lungs and then her brain.
His wife was an appealing person, Dennis Augur said, because she constantly reached out to others.
