Harry Edward Sprott overcame broken back
While in the Navy during World War II, Harry Edward Sprott fell off a ship and broke every bone in his back.
He lay in a full body cast for a year. The doctors said he would never walk again, but he did.
"I've never seen anyone with as much heart as this man had, " said his son, Harry Sprott, of Covington.
Mr. Sprott was transferred from Pearl Harbor to San Diego for sonar training just before the Japanese sneak attack in 1941. He spent most of the war in the Atlantic, serving on destroyers and submarine chasers.
The Covington resident spent most of his working years as an electrician with the Ford Motor Co. in Cincinnati. He was also a member of Scottish Rite Valley of Covington and Latonia Masonic Lodge No. 746 F&AM.
He was an outgoing and positive fellow, his son said. "He couldn't walk into a room that he didn't start talking to people, " he said.
He often volunteered at his church, South Side Baptist, where he served as a deacon and did odd jobs. "If they needed something done, they called Harry, " his son said.
Later in life, Mr. Sprott endured replacement surgeries on both his shoulders and three knee replacements. A car wreck in December sent the 81-year-old on his final, downhill slide, and he died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
