Vicky Staub Horwitz, radiation therapist
Vicky Staub Horwitz had a competitive spirit that was exemplified throughout her life.
"She was competitive in tennis and competitive in life, " said her husband, Martin J. Horwitz. "She inspired those she met with her great interest in life.
"She appreciated every facet of an experience. She knew how to stop and smell the roses."
Mrs. Horwitz, 48, of Villa Hills, a radiation therapist at area hospitals who battled cancer for seven years, died Saturday at her parents' home in Taylor Mill.
She began her career in the early 1970s and continued through the mid- 1990s. She was a radiation therapist at St. Elizabeth Medical Centers in Northern Kentucky and at Providence and Jewish hospitals in Cincinnati.
Mrs. Horwitz was a member of Mother of God Church in Covington and Wise Temple in Cincinnati.
She was a docent with the Cincinnati Art Museum. She enjoyed tennis, skiing and softball.
"She was effervescent, " her husband said. "Her mother said it best about her: 'She had a -- spirit that never flagged.'
"She battled this disease (cancer) for seven years.
"The art museum was a great passion of hers. She trained to become a docent to give tours to the public. She was a real student of art and history."
Besides her husband, other survivors include a daughter, Alexandra Siebler Horwitz of Villa Hills; a son, Zachary R. Pille of Villa Hills; her parents, Jack and Paula Mayhall Staub of Taylor Mill; sisters, Linda Niehaus of Park Hills, Donna Grady of Erlanger, Martha Ringo of Taylor Mill and Angel Sandfoss of Independence; and brothers, John Staub of Dayton, Ohio, and Rick Staub of Florence.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Wednesday at Mother of God Church in Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home in Latonia. Prayers will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

James Henry Barhorst, 72, of Covington, died at 10:25 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.
He was a retired switchman with Cincinnati Bell and a member of St. Augustine Church in Covington and Telephone Pioneers. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, June Ober Barhorst; sons, William Barhorst of Huber Heights, Ohio, and James Barhorst of Covington; a brother, R. Vernon Barhorst of Taylor Mill; and two grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Augustine Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Entombment will be in St. John Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell.

Dean Bathalter, 66, of Falmouth, died at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at her home.
She was an artist and author.
Survivors include her husband, Robert E. Bathalter; a son, James H. Barnard of Alexandria; a daughter, Victoria Lynn Wagner of Winchester; a brother, Darryl Maynhier of Louisa; sisters, Mary Jo Thompson, Lavaughn Engil, and Pauletta Walthers, all of Morehead; and two grandchildren.

Mary Margaret "Margie" Brannon, 73, of Lewisburg, died Sunday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Mays-ville. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church in Mays Lick and Mason County Homemakers. Her husband, Edward J. Brannon, died in 1991.
Survivors include sons, Charles Edward Brannon, Mark Brannon and John R. "Dick" Brannon, all of Lewisburg, and Timothy J. Brannon of Maysville; daughters, Kathy Kilby of Pine Knot and Jane Brannon of Lexington; and nine grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Rose of Lima Church, Mays Lick. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Palmer Funeral Home, Mays Lick. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Maysville.

Rev. Terrill F. Brewer, 79, of Nappanee, Ind., formerly of Morning View, died at 6:20 a.m. Saturday at his home.
He was a retired truck driver and minister, a member of Goshen, Ind., Church of God of Prophecy and the Nappanee American Legion Post, and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Ethel L. Hutchinson Brewer; sons, Phillip F. Brewer of Fitzgerald, Ga., Steven Riley Brewer of Nashville, Tenn., Daniel S. Brewer of Powder Springs, Ga., and Samuel K. Brewer of Elijay, Ga.; daughters, Oma J. Carpio of Atlanta, Alice Thomaston of Nappanee and Emma L. Lulinski of Deerwood, Minn.; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. EDT today at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, and at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Carmel Baptist Church, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Carmel Baptist Church. Helen C. Bucher, 88, of Fort Thomas, died at midnight Friday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home in Fort Thomas.
She was a retired employee of the Newport Water Works.
Survivors include cousins.

He was a member of Golden Rule Masonic Lodge No. 345, Latonia, and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Mary Eleanor Schoenecker Connor, 90, of Fort Mitchell, died at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Villaspring Health Care Center, Erlanger.
She was a homemaker and member of Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington. Her husband, Elmer Connor, died in 1986; a daughter, Carolyn Blank, 1995; and a son, Leonard Connor, 1999.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Applegarth of Fort Mitchell; eight grandchildren and 24 great- grandchildren.

He was a retired employee of Frito Lay and Dixie Vending Co.
