Sable Kitchen, owned upholstery business

Growing up as the children of Sable and Margaret Kitchen in Mays Lick meant growing up in a wonderland of antiques, refinished tables and expertly upholstered chairs.

That's because the 10-room apartment the Kitchens and their six children lived in was packed with the same kind of furniture and antiques sold and refinished one floor below in the family business: Kitchen's Up-holstery Shop.

The apartment and the shop were in a former Odd Fellows Lodge, and the business was a staple on Main Street for more than 30 years. The Kitchens retired in 1994.

"Customers from as far away as Florida who had relatives here would become customers after touring our house, " said daughter Linda Kitchen of Maysville.

Sable Kitchen died Monday morning at his home in Maysville.

He was 86.

Born and reared in Olive Hill, Mr. Kitchen spent about six months in a Paris sanitarium for tuberculosis in 1962 after mistakenly being diagnosed with the disease. But the experience ended happily. During his rehabilitation, he took classes in Lexington in furniture upholstery.

Already a carpenter, he parlayed his new skill into an upholstery business. He also sold antiques and did some woodworking. Among his handiwork were a handmade violin and bass fiddle.

Mr. Kitchen also was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Mills Branch Apostolic Church in Olive Hill.

He and his wife were married 58 years.

Linda Kitchen said her father was part Cherokee Indian and credited that as the reason his jet-black hair remained largely free of gray.

Mr. Kitchen was small, she said, but mighty.

"He was very petite, " she said. "The most he ever weighed was 140 pounds.

"But he was feisty, and he believed in discipline. When he said, 'Go, ' you went. When he said, 'Stop, ' you stopped.

"He was a good man and a good father, and he worked very hard."

Besides his wife and daughter, Mr. Kitchen is survived by daughters, Janice Sue Allen of Maysville, Vicki Polley of Vanceburg and Terri Linville of Ewing; sons, Ricky Kitchen and Paul Kitchen, both of Orangeburg; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
