Mildred Poe, nurse, took people in at home
Mildred Poe's faith was very important to her. She was the oldest member of Mays Lick Baptist Church -- and she had a vision shortly before she died.
"She talked about God and one night she said, 'Helen, look up there. There's a beautiful house and beautiful flowers. Don't you see them?'" said her daughter, Helen Sanders of Maysville.
"I said, 'Yes, Mama. That's heaven. That's where you're going.'"
Mrs. Poe, who lived in Mays Lick, died Tuesday at Maysville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She would have been 96 Saturday, now the day of her funeral.
She grew up in Robertson County but lived most of her life in Mason County. She was a practical nurse and began caring for elderly people in her home before her husband, Lawrence Poe, died in 1970.
After that, she moved to another home in Mays Lick and cared for as many as four people at a time for about five years. "She more or less kept an eye on them, and she cooked for them and did their laundry, " Sanders said.
"She was just a caring person, and she really did enjoy that."
Mrs. Poe also enjoyed yard work, her daughter said, especially tending her vegetable gardens of tomatoes and string beans, and her flowerbeds of petunias and begonias.
Sanders said her mother was witty and had a good sense of humor.
"She was loved all her life, " she said. "The nurses caring for her cried and said so many nice things about her after she died."
Surviving Mrs. Poe in addition to her daughter are sons, Howard Poe and Ray Poe, both of Cincinnati, Lawrence Poe Jr. of Maysville and Emmitt Poe of Mays Lick; 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great-grandchildren.
