Richard Gulick, longtime educator
Richard L. Gulick, a longtime school superintendent who guided the consolidation of Pendleton County schools, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was 88.

Mr. Gulick was a native of Pendleton County who dedicated his life to the county's children as a teacher, coach, administrator and community leader.

He was a high school sports star who went to the University of Cincinnati on basketball and football scholarships. He was drafted by the Detroit Lions to play football, but decided instead to follow his dream to become a teacher in Pendleton County, said his grandson, Steve Wood of Falmouth.

He taught at McKenneysburg School and Goforth School, where he became principal. He was assistant principal, coach and teacher at Morgan High School. He worked in a defense factory during the war and returned to education in 1943 as principal of the Morgan School, which served grades 1 through 12.

He helped consolidate the schools into the Pendleton county School System and served as assistant superintendent and superintendent through the 1960s and 1970s.

He retired in 1978 and served as a management consultant to the board of education .

"He taught me everything I know, " said Steve Wood. "He taught me about leadership and caring and putting people first. He would never ask anyone to do anything he wouldn't do or hadn't done before.

"Even when he was superintendent, if the bus driver wasn't available, it was nothing for him to jump in the bus and take the route for the day. The students always came first, " Wood said.

Mr. Gulick was a lifelong sports enthusiast. He and his wife, the late Ava Mains Gulick, had one daughter, Nancy Harville, who shared his interest in sports.

The Gulicks also had a farm where they raised cattle, corn and tobacco.

"That's where he taught me the meaning of work, " said his grandson. He also taught Steve and his brother, Rick Wood, the meaning of play, as they played basketball or shared hours in the shade, fishing together.

Mr. Gulick was an elder in Morgan Christian Church. He received the Flying Dutchman Award for coaching in 1954 and the Kentucky High School Coaches Association citation for outstanding years of service. He was past president of the Northern Kentucky School Superintendents and a member of the 10th region Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame.
