Jacob E. Davis, 97, business and government leader
Jacob E. Davis, who believed individuals must do their part to build a strong community, served Cincinnati as a leader in business, the law, government and civic affairs.
"The strength of a community is measured by the kinds of people who make it their home. -- Its economy, its industry, its cultural and governmental achievements -- all reflect the spirit, the purpose and the will of its residents, " he once said.
He was president of the Kroger Co., chairman of Bethesda Inc., chairman of the Ohio State University Board of Trustees, a founder of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation and president of the Community Chest and Council. He also was a lawyer, prosecutor, judge, state legislator, member of Congress and special assistant to the secretary of the Navy during World War II.
Mr. Davis, 97, died Friday in Naples, Fla.
A native of Beaver, Ohio, he graduated from Ohio State University and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received a law degree from Harvard University in 1930 and began practicing law in Waverly, Ohio. He served two terms as Pike County prosecutor, was twice elected to the Ohio General Assembly and was majority floor leader of the House until he became a Pike County Common Pleas Court judge in 1937.
He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1941 to 1943, when he became assistant general counsel of the Department of Navy and a special assistant to Navy Secretary James Forrestal.
Mr. Davis joined the Kroger Co. as a vice president in 1944, was elected a director in 1949, executive vice president in 1961 and president in 1962. He was president and chairman of the company until his retirement in 1970.
He served on the corporate boards of Kroger, Cincinnati Milacron, Anchor Hocking and Ohio National Life Insurance Co.
Mr. Davis became a member of the Columbus-based law firm of Vorys, Sater, Seymour & Pease when it opened a Cincinnati office in 1984.
For 30 years, he served on the board of Bethesda Inc. and was its chairman from 1975-90. Mr. Davis was one of the founding members of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation in 1963. He was the first chairman of its governing board and the volunteer director of the foundation from 1978 to 1986.
In his honor, the governing board created the Jacob E. Davis Volunteer Leadership Award at the time of his retirement. The award of $10, 000 is presented each year to an outstanding volunteer in the community.
Mr. Davis also was chairman of the 1957-58 United Appeal Campaign and served as president and chairman of the board of the Community Chest and Council. He also was co-chairman of the Citizens Committee to Improve Local Government.
He chaired the board of trustees of Ohio State University as well as a presidential search committee for the school. He also was president of Ohio State's National Alumni Association.
Mr. Davis was a member of the Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church and served on its board of trustees for many years.
He was honored as a Great Living Cincinnatian in 1977-78 and received the Alexis de Tocqueville Award from United Way in 1987.
Survivors include a son, Jacob E. Davis II of Columbus; a daughter, Eleanor Davis Nelson of Cincinnati; a sister, Mary Nancy Davis of Columbus; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Eleanor Davis.
Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church, followed by visitation at the church. Burial will be private at Spring Grove Mausoleum.

Harold Hiltibrand, 67, retired railroad worker
Harold L. Hiltibrand, 67, of Covington, the last station manager of the Covington Railroad Depot, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
Mr. Hiltibrand had a 44-year railroad career, working as transportation clerk for CSX Railroad Co. after serving as manager of the Covington Railroad Depot, which closed at Pike and Russell streets in 1962.
"That was history, " said Mr. Hiltibrand's wife, Jean Grigson Hiltibrand. "It was really sad when the depot closed.
"It had been a booming business in a beautiful building. The trains were announced on loud speakers. But, the railroad business changed from passengers to primarily freight."
Despite the closing of the depot, Mr. Hiltibrand "very much enjoyed his entire railroad career, " said his wife.
Mr. Hiltibrand's hobbies were fishing and building electronic instruments.
He also enjoyed volunteering for charity work and took a special interest in Covington's "Be Concerned" project that helped poor people.
"He was a quiet person and very family oriented, " said Mrs. Hiltibrand.
Other survivors include a son, Kim Hiltibrand of Fort Wright; a brother, Frank Hiltibrand of Newport; a sister, Dorothy Wheeler of Huntington, W.Va.; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Allison & Rose Funeral Home in Covington. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Entombment will be at Mother of God Mausoleum, Fort Wright.

Dolores Ann Powell Albers, 59, of Union, died Saturday at her home. A daughter, Tammy Simons, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Albers; a son, James Duncan of Independence; daughters, Sheila Duncan of Covington and Robin Duncan of Erlanger; a stepdaughter, Tracie Harrison of Grant County; a brother, Earl Powell of Covington; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Steven L. Byerly, 46, of Crescent Springs, died at 8:45 p.m. Saturday at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, Danville. He was an owner of Main Street Cash Co. and a member of Danville Masonic Lodge and Lexington Avenue Baptist Church in Danville.

Odelia "Polly" Courtney, 94, of Cynthiana, died Thursday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana. She was a retired farmer and a member of Boyer's Chapel United Methodist Church.

Pearl Elizabeth Egbring, 85, of Dayton, died Friday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of the Salvation Army.
Her husband, Anthony Egbring, died in 1982. He was a retired meat cutter, a member of St. Barbara Church in Erlanger and Holy Cross Church, Latonia, and a professional musician. He was active in the St. Vincent DePaul Society and was an Army veteran of World War II. A daughter, Connie Voges, died in 1974.

Leroy H. Thompson, 78, of Hebron, died at 3 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired real estate broker with Leroy H. Thompson Agency, a member and elder emeritus of Bullittsville Christian Church and a member of Hebron Masonic Lodge No. 757 and Scottish Rite, Covington. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Anita Florence Cook Vice, 80, of Burlington, died Saturday at Village Care Center, Erlanger. She was a member of Burlington Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Solid Rockers choral group. Her husband, Virgil Vice, preceded her in death.

Melva McBride Young, 102, of Falmouth, died Saturday at Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation Center, Highland Heights. She was a soloist with First Baptist Church in Miami and a church pianist with Falmouth Baptist Church, where she was a member.
