Agnes Strickley McNay, loved job as toy worker
Agnes Strickley McNay took a summer job with the former Kenner Toy Co. to earn extra money so her family could take a vacation.
The Fort Thomas resident wound up staying with the Cincinnati toy company for 35 years, becoming head of the sample department.
"She loved every day she worked there, " said her daughter, Kathy McNay Grimm of Fort Thomas.
Mrs. McNay died Monday at Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation Center, Highland Heights. She was 81.
Her toy connection made her a natural for the role of neighborhood Santa Claus as Christmas time. She distributed surplus toys to children of her neighbors and the poor.
"Everyone looked to her to make sure that someone got something, " her daughter said.
She knew every one of her co-workers, and touched all their lives, her daughter said. "That was her life."
Former Kenner employees, most of whom moved to Rhode Island after Hasbro bought the company, called to check on her up to the very end, Grimm said.
Mrs. McNay retired to take care of her husband, the late John R. McNay, who died March 6, 1995, of Alzheimer's disease. Then Mrs. McNay started to show signs of the disease, too.
She stayed with her daughter until October, when she moved into the nursing home.
