Howard N. Dutle, 82, loved life and learning
Howard Nicholas Dutle loved life, and wasn't afraid to try new things, even in his old age.
The 82-year-old Cold Spring resident, who died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas, had a septuple heart bypass about eight years ago.
Mr. Dutle recovered well enough to continue throwing horseshoes, one of the pastimes he enjoyed after his retirement as an engineer for the General Electric Aircraft Division in Evendale, Ohio.
He loved woodworking, and eventually collected so many tools he had to build a garage to hold them, said his son, Michael H. Dutle of Newport.
"There are still carousels and wooden games out there that are just marvels of construction, " Michael Dutle said.
Howard Dutle's interest in woodworking led him to the Internet, and eventually to using electronic equipment to send pictures and e-mails to his relatives.
"All this was after he was 80 years old, " his son said. "I thought that was amazing, that someone that advanced was willing to learn something so complicated."
Mr. Dutle did all the household repairs himself -- "we never saw a contractor come into the house, " his son said. And no matter how much or how little money he made, he always paid his tithe first, saying the other bills would take care of themselves.
He was a member of St. Joseph Church in Cold Spring, the Holy Name Society and Cursillo.
He was also a Marine Corps veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
Other survivors include his wife, Catherine Oldiges Dutle; daughters, Barbara A. Woeste of Alexandria, Mary J. Marcon of Alamo, Calif., Alice C. Saner of California, Teresa M. Ritter and Amy R. Tischner, both of Camp Springs; another son, Martin J. Dutle of California; sisters, Gertrude Dutle of Highland Heights, Dorothy Oldiges of Camp Springs and Maryanne Fisk of Summerville; a brother, Bernard "Dutch" Dutle of Newport; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
