Dorothy McGuire, 93, was life-long volunteer
When she and her husband moved to a 22-acre farm in Florence in 1947, Dorothy May McGuire knew nothing about farm life.
But it didn't take the energetic Mrs. McGuire and her husband long to learn about raising livestock and growing vegetables. They even started an apple orchard and a grape arbor, selling fruit from them to make a little extra money.
Because she was one of the few people to own a car in the Florence area at the time, Ms. McGuire often offered rides to nuns at St. Paul's Church.
But what would have broken the backs of many wasn't even a warm-up for Mrs. McGuire. In addition to starting a Girl Scout troop, over the years she volunteered for the St. Elizabeth Auxiliary, Florence Lions Club and Auxiliary, the Mt. Zion Homemakers Club, the Gemma Guild and the Northern Kentucky Homebuilders Association.
"It seemed like anything she participate in she wound up becoming president, " said Rosemary McGuire, a daughter from Edgewood. "She was a self-made, self-educated woman who was full of intelligence. She was like a walking dictionary."
Mrs. McGuire, 93, of Fort Wright, formerly of Florence, died Thursday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington. Her husband, Roger Lee McGuire, died in 1981.
Mrs. McGuire enjoyed reading -- she was a member of the Covington Book Club -- and played in a bridge group at Summit Hills Country Club.
Always on the go, she was a common sight driving her 1984 Cadillac Eldorado, which she kept driving until 1996.
"She was just an outgoing, take-charge type person who wanted to do everything, " Rosemary McGuire said. "She even wanted to water ski when she was in her 70s, but my dad wouldn't let her."
