Miriam Christine, helped others
Although she never took final vows to become a nun, Sister Miriam Christine, O.C.D.S., found ways to serve others anyway.
For about eight years, the former Carolyn Theresa Broering, who died Feb. 26 at University Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, ran a school in her home in North Fairmount for children having difficulties in the public schools.
"She was very interested in helping underprivileged children, and those who had difficulty learning, " said her sister, Sister Mary Ann Broering, C.D.P., of Melbourne.
Ms. Broering didn't charge tuition for the six to eight students in her school. She was a member of Presentation Ministries, a group of Catholics who take care of each other's financial and other needs.
In the last years of the school, she became a foster mother to a family of three children, and remained their foster mother for about two years, her sister said.
Formerly of Dayton, she graduated from Thomas More College and later earned a degree from Xavier University.
Before starting her school, she taught at St. Joseph in Cold Spring, St. Catherine in Fort Thomas, St. James in Ludlow and St. Henry in Erlanger. After she closed her school, she taught at St. Boniface in Cincinnati, Campbell County Middle School and the Phoenix Community Learning Center in Over-the-Rhine.
A former supervisor said she could teach stones to read, her sister said.
As a young woman, Ms. Broering entered the convent of the Sisters of Charity in Nazareth, Ky., but didn't take vows. Still attracted to the religious life, two years later she became a professed member of the Passionist order in Erlanger.
This time, when her temporary vows expired after three years, she was again advised not to take permanent vows and left the order. She eventually became a lay member of another order, the Discalced Carmelites.
She had a bubbly personality and was laughing all the time, her sister said.
"She was always thoughtful of other people, and completely forgetful of herself, " her sister said. "If she saw someone in need, she would do without food or medicine to help that person."
She was even helping others after she died: Her eyes were donated to an eye bank and her body to science.
She was active in the Home Schooling Association, and New Jerusalem Community, both in Cincinnati.
