Hazel Juanita Cook, avid fan of all sports
Hazel Juanita Cook was a sports fan's sports fan.
"She was an avid sports buff. It didn't matter what sport it was, " said her son, Ronald Kennedy of Dry Ridge.
"She could at any time just mention the name of any standout in any sport. It didn't matter if it was Lance Armstrong, the cyclist, or (Greg) Maddux, the Atlanta pitcher, she knew them.
"If she could tell us today, I'm sure her main regret is she didn't live long enough to see UK bring home the national championship."
Ms. Cook died Tuesday at her home in Williamstown. She was 78.
She developed meal plans for the Arkansas State Hospital in Little Rock for 25 years.
"She was on a first-name basis with Bill and Hillary Clinton, " Kennedy said. "With her last name being Cook, I don't know if Bill gave her this nickname, but he always called her 'Cookie.'
"When she retired, he came personally and signed her retirement certificate."
Ms. Cook remained in Arkansas after she retired in 1988. There, she was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church in Little Rock.
She also did some traveling -- although she stuck to buses because she didn't like to fly.
But Kennedy brought his mother back to Northern Kentucky in 2000 because her health was failing.
"The last two years afforded us a closeness that I will cherish, and I'm sure it was a comfort for her, also, " he said.
Another son, Dwight Kennedy, preceded Ms. Cook in death.
