Kevin Vannarsdall, real estate agent
Kevin Vannarsdall spent his adult life as a mechanic and volunteer firefighter before deciding on a career change.
He recently made the career switch when he became a licensed real estate agent for Century 21 in LaGrange. "He said he wanted a change, to do something different, " said his wife, Debra. "He studied and got his (real estate) license."
Mr. Vannarsdall, 38, of Carrollton, died Thursday in an automobile accident on Ky. 36, five miles west of Carrollton. He was returning home from a doctor's appointment when his car crossed the center line and hit a truck, his wife said.
Mr. Vannarsdall and his wife married
after high school and had two sons.
"He loved spending time with the kids, " his wife said. "He was outspoken. If he believed something, he'd say it."
Mr. Vannarsdall was a Boy Scout troop leader and coached T-ball and soccer.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Carrollton and until recently had worked at his father's garage and wrecking service in Carrollton.
Mr. Vannarsdall began volunteering at fire departments as a teen, his wife said, and most recently volunteered at the Carrollton Fire Department. He was a former member of Carroll County Ambulance Service, Carroll County Rescue Squad and Ghent Volunteer Fire Department.
In December he broke his hip and suffered other injuries in an auto accident. He was still recovering from those injuries, his wife said.
Other survivors include his sons, Zachary Thomas Vannarsdall and Ryan Kevin Vannarsdall; parents, Gene Thomas and Bonnie Jean Lewis Vannarsdall of Carrollton, a brother, Thomas Keith Vannarsdall of Carrollton; paternal grandmother, Virginia Vannarsdall of Ghent; and maternal grandmother, Lura Lewis of Carrollton.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Carrollton. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton. Memorials are suggested to The Kevin Vannarsdall Memorial Fund, c/o First National Bank, P.O. Box 149, Carrollton, Ky.
Clyde Oliver Allender, 76, of Brooksville, died Friday at Villaspring of Erlanger.
He was a maintenance worker for Kent Corp., a farmer, a member of Johnsville Methodist Church, Foster, and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Violet Louise Taylor Allender, died in 1999.
Survivors include sons, Dewey R. Allender of Grove City, Ohio, and Jerry W. Allender of Wilmore; a daughter, Sheila K. Allender of Clarksville, Ind.; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Johnsville United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Burial will be in Johnsville Cemetery, Foster.
Ellis E. Barker, 75, of Wilder, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
He was a district sales representative for General Electric and Hobart Co., a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Newport, St. John's Retired Men's Club and Fort Thomas Retired Men's Club, and a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Jean Barker; a son, Todd Barker of Fort Thomas; daughters, Kim Burns of Portsmouth, Ohio, and Jill Zuniga of Lexington; a brother, Norman Barker of Withamsville, Ohio; sisters, Ila Beard of Withamsville, Ohio, Ina Burns of Mount Carmel, Ohio, Imogene Pullon of Dallas, Texas, and Charlsie Inez Barker and Ivalene Barker, both of Bristol, Va.; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at St. John's United Church of Christ. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, and at noon Monday at the church. Troy Carter, 34, of Erlanger, died Tuesday at his home. He was a server with Pizza Hut, Highland Heights.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Christine Carter and Robert Nolan of Erlanger; his father and stepmother, Duane and Betsy Niemeyer of Covington; brothers, Health Niemeyer of Florence, Josh Niemeyer of Covington and Malcolm Niemeyer of San Diego; and sisters, Carrie Mardis of Boone County, Amy Niemeyer of Erlanger and Heather Niemeyer of Covington.
Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. March 22 at Mary Queen of Heaven Church, Erlanger. Cremation will be at Southwest Ohio Crematory, Milford, Ohio.

Vernon B. Cloyd, 90, of Florence, died Thursday at Woodspoint Geriatric Center, Florence. He was a self-employed painter and a member of Florence Church of Christ. His wife, Hettie Cloyd, died in 1983.
Survivors include his daughters, Phyllis Chandler and Beverly Lawless, both of Florence; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery.

Edith Fields Steinfort Smith Gambrell, 82, of Covington, died at 3 a.m. Friday her daughter's home in Covington.
She was a machine operator retired from Duro Bag Co., Covington, and a former machine operator with Wadsworth Electric Co., Covington. After retiring, she was a nurse's aide at Garrard Convalescent Home, Covington.
Her first husband, Charles W. Steinfort, died in 1975, her second husband, Clifford Smith, died in 1994, her third husband, Robert Gambrell, died in 1996, and a son, Billie Steinfort, died in 1970.
Survivors include sons, Robert W. Steinfort of Crescent Springs, Michael C. Smith of Burlington and Hobart Gambrell of Latonia; a daughter, Sherry L. Baker of Covington; brothers, Leslie Fields of Florence and Albert J. Fields of Butler; sisters, Elizabeth Fischer of Ludlow, Mary Neumeister of Williamstown and Ruth Bonar of Liberty, Ind.; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Granville Hadden IV, 21, of West Covington, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Earl E. Hinte Sr., 79, of Covington, died at 10:20 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a retired construction worker and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Beaulah D. Hinte; sons, Earl Hinte Jr. of Taylor Mill and Ronnie Hinte of Palm Beach, Fla.; daughters, Patricia Ferguson of Florence and Nancy Csikany of Philadelphia, Pa.; brothers, Chris Hinte of Price Hill, W.Va., Eugene Hinte of Mount Hope, W.Va., Arnold Hinte of Cleveland, Ohio, and Donnie Hinte of Palrome, Ohio; a sister, Margie Cimala of Beckley, W.Va.; 25 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Lizzie Hornback, 84, of Newport, died Friday at Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation, Highland Heights. She was a retired clothing presser. Her husband, Harvey Hornback Sr., died in 2002.
Survivors include her son, Harvey Hornback Jr. of Dry Ridge; a stepson, John Hornback of Prescott, Ariz.; stepdaughters, Gloria Newman of Charleston, S.C., and Londa Haigis and Dolores Marshall, both of Newport; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Visitation will be private. Cremation will be in Fares J. Radel Funeral Home and Crematory, Cincinnati.

Melsena Martin, 78, of Taylor Mill, died at 5:18 p.m. Friday at her home. Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.
Bonnie Sue Short, 57, of Fort Thomas, died Friday at her home. She was the owner/operator of Bonnie's Boutique, a deli clerk for Kroger in Highland Heights and Bellevue, and a Select member of Humane Society of the United States.
Survivors include her husband, Jerome Short.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Arvada R. Stuard, 84, of Walton, died Thursday at Villaspring of Erlanger. She was a former employee of Green's Cleaner, Georgetown, and a member of the Salem United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, George Stuard; and daughters, Martha Faye Hess of Alex, Okla., and Louise Bell of Walton.

Virginia Obermeyer Volz, 81, of Milan, Ind., died Thursday at Ripley Crossing Care Center, Milan. She was a homemaker. Her husband, William P. Volz, died in 1991.

Survivors include sons, Ronald E. Hayes of Covington and Roger J. Hayes of Largo, Fla.; a daughter, Marketta Hayes of Fort Thomas; a brother, Art Faust of Jonesboro, Ind.; sisters, Fay Marler of Somerset and Darlene Johnson of Cincinnati; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
