'Doug' Constiner, WWII hero
W.D. "Doug" Constiner, 86, of Burlington, who overcame wounds suffered in World War II to operate a welding shop and work for Standard Oil of Ohio, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.

Mr. Constiner was the former owner of Complete Welding Service in Bromley and a former tanker man for Standard Oil, unloading petroleum from Ohio River barges.

He was a past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 44, in Ludlow, and a member of the Scottish Rite and Mystic Shrine. He was a 32nd degree Mason.

Mr. Constiner was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star in World War II. He saw combat in the New Guinea Islands with the U.S. Army's 41st Infantry Division.

"His wounds left him with no feeling in his left arm, but he was able to overcome it and do a lot of work with his hands, " said Mr. Constiner's daughter-in-law, Judy Green of Scott Depot, W. Va.

"He was a very creative person. At his welding shop, someone would come in with a problem and he could solve what-ever it was.

"He also did a lot of woodworking and finishing furniture."

Mr. Constiner was very patriotic, Mrs. Green said.

"His military service never left him, " she said. "His patriotism ran very deep."

Mr. Constiner enjoyed spending time with his seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

"He was very proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed being around them, " said Mrs. Green. "He just loved these kids."

Other survivors include Mr. Constiner's wife of 56 years, Dora Virginia Urban Constiner; a sister, Mary B. Medina of Chicago; two stepsons, William W. Green III of Buena Park, Calif., and Michael L. Green of Scott Depot, W. Va; seven grand-children and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home in Ludlow. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m.

Burial will be at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Taylor Mill.

Memorials may be made to the First Church of Christ, 6080 Camp Ernst Road, Burlington, Ky., 41005.

Audra Chipman Adkins, 86, of Williamstown, died at 12:45 a.m. today at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown.

Hilda Mae Billiter, 88, of Inverness, Fla., formerly of Florence, died Thursday at Hospice Care Center, Brooksville, Fla.

She was a homemaker. Her husband, Silas Billiter, preceded her in death.

Survivors include seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Forest Lawn Mausoleum Chapel, Erlanger. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Joseph H. "Joe-Joe" Blackburn, 68, of Covington, died at 7:32 p.m. Saturday at UC Medical Center, Cincinnati.

He was a kitchen helper retired from Hyatt Regency Hotel, Cincinnati.

Survivors include his brother, James W. Blackburn of Covington; and a sister, Patricia Wren of Covington.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation begins there at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Edith F. Brown, 78, of Wilder, died Saturday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home, Fort Thomas.

She was a former co-owner of Brown TV and Appliance, a member of Gideons Auxiliary, First Baptist Church, Fort Thomas, and a former missionary worker.

Survivors include her husband, Lillard K. Brown; sons, Larry Brown of Fort Thomas and Mike Brown of Chicago, Ill.; daughters, Sharon Brown of Wilder, Pam Brumley of Fort Thomas and Connie Davis of Foster; a brother, Melvin Richter of Wilder; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Frank L. Carrigan, 75, of Aberdeen, Ohio, died at 1:35 a.m. Saturday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville.

He was the retired owner and operator of Carrigan Supply Co., Maysville, a former Realtor, past president of the Maysville Players, licensed funeral director and embalmer formerly employed by J.W. Porter and Son Funeral Home, an automobile salesman for Clarke Motor Co., Gibson Motor Co. and Calvert Motors, and a member of the Ring Gold Lodge IOOF.

Survivors include his wife Barbara Lee Carrigan; daughters, Lee Carrigan Trent of Danville and Cindy Carrigan Abel of Aberdeen; and four grand-children.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Palmer Funeral Home, May's Lick. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maysville Cemetery.

Sue Clore, 47, of Ludlow, died at 7:25 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice Unit, Covington.

She was an office receptionist for Bethesda Breast Center.

Survivors include her husband, Joel E. Clore III; a son, Joel E. Clore IV of Ludlow; a daughter, Brandy Clark of Walton; sisters, Carolyn Fuentes of Florence and Brenda Kohler of Fort Wright; brothers, William Fugate Jr. of Florence and Gary Fugate of West Covington; and a granddaughter.

Services will be at noon Thursday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hopeful Lutheran Cemetery, Florence.

Blanche Ashcraft Conroy, 85, of Falmouth, died Saturday at Riverside Hospital, Columbus, Ohio.

She was a retired assistant city clerk in Falmouth, bookkeeper at Fishers Chevy, Falmouth, and a member of St. Francis Xavier Church. Her husband, James Leo Conroy, died in 1972.

Survivors include her son, Patrick Conroy of Walton; daughters, Veronica Conroy Hargett of Falmouth, Kathleen Conroy Malthouse of Columbus, Ohio, and Jane Conroy Arnold of Mount Sterling; eight grand-children and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery, Falmouth.

Thomas J. Darpel, 66, of Fort Thomas, died at 8:17 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

He was a salesman retired from the Diocese of Covington cemetery Office, Erlanger, a former employee of Monarch Tool and Die Co., Covington, a member of St. Thomas Choir, St. Thomas Boosters, St. Thomas 55 Club, and Southgate Super Seniors.

Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline "Jackie" Bartlett Darpel; sisters, Kathy Ramsey of Reading, Ohio, and Patricia Williams and Dottie Woodruff, both of Loveland, Ohio; and brothers, George Lemming of Mansfield, Ohio, and Edward Lemming of Mount Healthy, Ohio.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Thomas Church Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Prayers will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Ruby J. Fennell, 98, of Highland Heights, died Friday at Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation, Highland Heights.

She was a homemaker, past president of Newport Republicans Club, a member of National Federation of Women Republican Club, and a voting pole volunteer.

Survivors include her son, Robert E. Fennell of Fort Thomas; a daughter, Marlene Holland of Fort Thomas; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Walter E. Greenwell, 71, of Crittenden, died Friday at VA Medical Center, Cincinnati.

He was a bottler for the Meyer Milk Co., Cincinnati, a member of Sherman Church of Christ and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Hisel Greenwell; sons, Daryl Greenwell of Dry Ridge and Gary Greenwell and Danny Greenwell, both of Crittenden; daughters, Karen Glore of Dry Ridge and Vicky Sizemore of London; a brother, Richard "Ted" Greenwell of Butler; a sister, Judy Vater of Grand Prairie, Texas; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. today at Gardnersville Christian Church, Gardnersville. Visitation begins there at 1 p.m. today. Burial will be in Gardnersville Cemetery.

Hobert B. Hill, 80, of Covington, died Saturday at Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation, Highland Heights.

He was a carpenter retired from Messer Construction Co., a member of Decoursey Baptist Church, Covington, Demossville Masonic Lodge No. 220, and Scottish Rite Valley of Covington. His first wife, Kathryn Simpson Hill, died in 1984, a son, Hobert Glenn Hill, died in 1995, and a daughter, Bobbie Jean Mann, died in 2002.

Survivors include his wife, Lou Hammons Hill; sons, Jim Hill of Covington, Jimmy Wells of Falmouth and David Wells of Cincinnati; daughters, Kathy Ann Giglia of Taylor Mill and Darlene Simpson and Mary Lou Johnson, both of Falmouth; a brother, J.C. Hill of Falmouth; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Charles Hilligas, 75, of Independence, died at 3:50 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Lillian Hunt Humphrey, 88, of Robertson County, died Saturday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Piqua Christian Church. Her husband, Albert Louis Humphrey, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her daughter, Edna C. Humphrey of Lewisburg; a brother, Harold T. Hunt of North Middletown; and a sister, Lila F. Willoughby of North Middletown.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Robertson County Funeral Home, Mount Olivet. Burial will be in Carlisle Cemetery.

Paul N. Ireland, 88, of Williamstown, died at 9:45 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was a general manager retired from Northern Kentucky Production Credit Association, Williamstown, former co-owner of Western Auto Associate Store, Williamstown, and former owner of Ireland's Saws and Mowers, Williamstown.

He also was a former Williamstown city council member, an Army veteran of World War II, and a member of Orion Lodge No. 222 F&AM, Falmouth, and Williamstown United Methodist Church. His wife, Dorothy Perry Ireland, died in 1996.

Survivors include his son, Paul H. Ireland of Williamstown; a daughter, Arva Leming of Independence; a brother, Charles D. Ireland of Lexington; sisters, Katherine Schwartz, Irene Dacci and Jean Hudson, all of Lexington; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will begin there at noon Tuesday. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery.

Melsina Arthesia Martin, 78, of Taylor Mill, died at 5:18 p.m. Friday at her home.

She was retired from the trust department at the former Star Bank, Covington. Her husband, James D. Martin, died in 1991, and a son, Larry S. Martin, died at 10:16 a.m. Saturday.

Survivors include her son, James E. Martin of Dacula, Ga.; sisters, Ruth Rardin of Latonia and Rosetta McCombs of West Virginia; seven grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Larry Stewart Martin, 50, of Taylor Mill, died at 10:16 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Latonia.

Survivors include his wife, Pamela Joan Flaherty Martin; sons, Nick Martin and Rick Taylor, both of Taylor Mill; a brother, James Eldon Martin of Dacula, Ga.; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

John H. Noakes Sr., 79, of Cynthiana, died Friday at his home.

He was a self-employed contractor, running John Noakes Plumbing and Heating, Cynthiana, a member of the St. Edward's Catholic Church, Cynthiana, and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. His wife, Dorothy Noakes, died in 1991.

Survivors include a daughter, Darlene Haufler of Cynthiana; a son, John H. Noakes Jr. of Tucson, Ariz., and half-brothers, Chris Whitis of St. Cloud, Fla., and Dewey Whitis Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Edward's Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the church. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.

Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth, is handling the arrangements.

Helen Beatrice Poe, 36, of Maysville, died Saturday from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Mason County.

Arrangements are pending at Robertson County Funeral Home, Mount Olivet.

Ann M. Schafnitz, 66, of Covington, died at 4:14 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

She was an attendant for Ladies Jockeys retired from River Downs Race Track, Cincinnati, and a volunteer for Citizens Advocacy of Covington. Her husband, Bernard Ducham, and a son, Anthony Ducham, both preceded.

Survivors include her sons, Steve Ducham and Larry Ducham, both of Covington; a sister, Helen Kemper of Covington; six grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Cremation will be in Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati.

Ruth Schnellenger, 89, of Demossville, died Friday at her home.

She was a librarian retired from the Cincinnati Public Library and a member of Unity Baptist Church, Pendleton County. Her son, Robert Schnellenger, died in 2002.

Survivors include her daughter, Betty Boettcher of Demossville; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Michael E. Wanner, 44, of Alexandria, died at 9:30 a.m. Friday at his home.

He was an employee of Bluegrass Recycling Co., Hebron.

Survivors include his mother, Alta Wanner of Alexandria; and sisters, Donna Moore of California and Rebecca Wanner of Alexandria.

Services will be at 8 p.m. today at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. today. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.
