Alice Craycraft, ex-city clerk
Alice Jones Walker Craycraft knew about keeping her nose to the grindstone. In addition to raising three children, she worked as a waitress and then as a bookkeeper, including 15 years for the city of Fort Thomas, for which she was also city clerk for two years.

But she also enjoyed kicking up her heels -- literally.

"She was a cheerleader at Dayton High School, " said her son, Roger D. Walker of Fort Thomas. "She used to do cheers for us. I have a picture of her on her 85th birthday kicking her leg above her head. She remained quite limber."

Mrs. Craycraft, of Fort Thomas, died at 11 p.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was 87.

Mrs. Craycraft kept in touch with a circle of friends -- they called themselves "The Club" -- from high school through most of her adult life. They met once a month for more than 65 years. She finally dropped out about two years ago after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, Walker said.

His mother was also active for many years at First Presbyterian Church in Dayton, Walker said. "She always wanted to do for whoever needed it, " he said. "At a time like this, she'd be the first to bring food over."

Mrs. Craycraft loved to travel, and the trip she treated her family to in the early 1950s was one of her favorite memories.

"She won $1, 000 in a raffle, and with that she bought a car and paid for a trip out West, " her son said.

After her first husband, Carlos Walker, died in 1965, she was a widow for nearly 30 years before marrying Robert Craycraft in 1994. He died in December.
