James Watters, loved to cook
James Robert Watters learned to cook while a member of the Covington Fire Department, and he took the skill home with him.
Mr. Watters, who died Thursday at his home in Fort Wright, cooked nearly every day for his wife, Charlotte Pettit Watters. His favorite meals were soups, chili and spaghetti.
"He liked to keep his recipes as a secret, " his widow said.
Mr. Watters retired from the fire department in 1987 after 26 years of service, having attained the rank of captain. His fellow firefighters knew him as "Friendly Jim, " because he was so personable, his widow said.
He liked to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren, Michael, Rachael and Chad Jasper.
In his younger years, he enjoyed golf, hunting and traveling.
The Marine Corps veteran had planned a cruise to Alaska, but congestive heart failure prevented him from ever going.
Survivors include a son, Robert James Watters of Williamstown; a daughter, Rosalind Dawn Jasper of Latonia; a brother, Louis Watters of Florence; sisters, Louise Zerhusen of Independence, Ann Hamilton of Florence and Mary Marksberry of Taylor Mill.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Calvary Baptist Church, Latonia. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Susie S. Bishop, 73, of Warsaw, died Thursday at her home. She was a retired former restaurateur in Warsaw and Carrollton and a member of Sparta Christian Church. Her husband, Charles Bishop, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Judy Jeffers and Carolyn Sampson, both of Florence; a sister, Jeanette Davis of Sparta; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Warsaw Cemetery. Frank Lair Bowen, 76, of Harrison County, died Wednesday at his home. He was a self-employed land development contractor and a farmer, a member of Colemansville Christian Church and the Berry Lions Club, and was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Edwards Bowen; a son, Charles Bowen of Williamstown; daughters, Nancy Sautter of Hebron and Linda Shuffett of Columbus, Ind.; sisters, Alberta Tussey of Cynthiana and Nell Gaffin of Carlisle; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Berry. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 508 E. Pike St., Cynthiana, Ky. 41031.
Eleanor Catherine Litmer Carroll, 90, of Highland Heights, died Wednesday at Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation Center, Highland Heights.
Arrangements are pending at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.
Mary Afton Durr Flynn, 94, of Walton, died Wednesday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Walton Christian Church and Walton Chapter No. 161 Order of the Easter Star.
Survivors include daughters, Evelyn Flynn Rouse and Frances Flynn Wireman, both of Walton; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Walton Christian Church. Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery. Margaret Ann Klein, 80, of Highland Heights, died at 5:30 a.m. Thursday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of A.J. Jolly Golf Course, St. Joseph Seniors in Cold Spring and the Scatter Brains Card Club. She was also a volunteer with St. Luke Hospitals. Her husband, Earl Klein, died in 1997.
Survivors include sons, Greg Klein of Little Rock, Ark., Robert Klein of Clarks Hill, Ind., Joseph Klein and Jerry Klein, both of Alexandria; a daughter, Sandra Story of Shakopee, Minn.; a sister, Bettie Taylor of Fort Thomas; 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Entombment will be in St. Stephen Mausoleum, Fort Thomas. William Cordell Pyles, 78, of Carrollton, died Thursday at Gallatin Health Care Center, Warsaw. He was a retired postal route carrier with the U.S. Postal Service in Carrollton, a member of English Christian Church and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton.
Margaret M. "Mardie" Rolfsen, 86, of Ludlow, died Thursday.

Truman Turner Jr., 54, of Butler, died Wednesday at Veterans Medical Center, Lexington. He was a retired shipyard worker with the U.S. Naval Yards in Falls River, Mass., a member of New Macedonia Old Regular Baptist Church in Newport, and a Navy veteran.
Survivors include a daughter, Amy Abate of Massachusetts; stepdaughters, Michelle Sousa and Cheryl Sousa, both of Massachusetts; sons, Truman Turner III of Massachusetts and Keith Turner of Butler; his parents, Truman and Gladys Turner Sr. of Butler; a brother, Jeff Turner of Butler; sisters, Diana Tomlinson and Edna Britton, both of Butler, Jane Sarbeck of Mission Viejo, Calif., Kathryn Lundberg of Apopka and Sue Stone of Fredonia; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Macedonia Old Regular Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Grants Lick.
Keen Varney, Jr., 74, of Williamstown, died today at St. Elizabeth Medical Center/Grant County, Williamstown.
Arrangements are pending at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown.
Dennis Ray Wagner, 41, of Covington, died Wednesday at his home. He was an Army veteran.
Survivors include sisters, Denise Thames of Erlanger and Yvonne Caldwell of Independence; brothers, Michael Wagner of Cold Spring and William Wagner of Latonia.
Services were at noon today at Catchen Funeral Home, Elsmere. Burial was in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
