William Kordenbrock, trained racehorses
William Jack "Hutch" Kordenbrock was the kind of man who liked to sit around the kitchen table and debate the issues of the day.
His son, Rusty Kordenbrock of Erlanger, remembers doing that with his father and a friend during the 1960s.
His father, who died Monday at age 78 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood, was a personable, outgoing man. "He was a feisty son of a gun. He could get a little hot under the collar here and there, but he was liked by a lot of people, " the younger Kordenbrock said.
"Hutch" Kordenbrock loved sports.
The Independence resident was a member of the Lloyd Boosters and did the announcing at Lloyd home football games.
He also coached Dixie Knothole baseball teams.
"He had an impact on a lot of young people, " his son said.
"To this day, when they talk about my father, they have a warm spot in their heart for him."
Mr. Kordenbrock served in the Army during World War II, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he worked as a tile setter for about 23 local builders.
Then he made an abrupt career switch, and started training racehorses. He never trained a horse worth more than $10, 000, his son said, but the horses raced at River Downs, Turfway Park and Keeneland.
It was a small, family business, Rusty Kordenbrock said, "a way for me and my brother and dad to do something together."
Mr. Kordenbrock's first wife, Judy Kordenbrock, died in 1980.
Surviving in addition to his son are his wife, Dorothy Kordenbrock; another son, Matt Kordenbrock of Hebron; a daughter, Cindy Galloway of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a sister, Barbara DePres of Fort Wright; and four grandchildren.
